Matt H
The GF is looking for a digi camera. I was looking on Amazon at the Black Friday offers and noticed this: Samsung ES71 (comes in pink! ) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-ES71-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B00361ECEU/ref=br_lf_m_1000277773_1_10_ttl?ie=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&s=electronics&pf_rd_p=218870927&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000277773&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=12SXTWWEA4EQMFBPS772 Any thoughts? seems like good value to me, but I'm not expert on cameras? Thorin
That camera will suit you your girlfriend just fine Matt, looks like a pretty decent buy for the price.

What do you think of that one on amazon? Would you not go for it?

Matt H
It's pink you'll love it There's plenty of cameras that come in pink though. Which one of them to get is that hard choice.
Dnk
Why not check out what the Gadget show says, they seem to do very good user tests on cameras etc

This is my current favourite - however it's red, and not digital. http://uk.shop.lomography.com/holga-gsn-120-red-edition

st3ven1
Are they much better than the one I linked on Amazon compared to the price difference? What do you think of that one on amazon? Would you not go for it? In a word yes, I've previously sold cameras and had no end of samsung/kodak/fujifilm/vivitar returned faulty at that price. Lucky if I've seen 2/3 faulty panasonics/canons. The next price bracket up will be a significantly better camera with much better lenses(glass as opposed to plastic) and better image processors. This is the most important thing to look at when buying a digital camera. For instance the panasonic has a glass leica lens and optical image stabilisation, which will produce clearer and more natural photographs. The samsung will also feel cheaper and not as well made as the panasonic/canon. Go into a shop and see them side by side, you will see what I'm talking about. Also remember the image on the lcd screen is only as good as the screen itself, so a overly bright screen might look better but if you zoom in on picture in you might find it blurs quickly. Its a trick to make poorer cameras seem to produce brighter pictures. One more thing: It is possible to have a poor looking picture from a 12mp camera and a stunning one from 5mp camera. Don't get hung up on mega-pixels, a 6.2mp image still in perfect focus is the same size as a 50" tv.
SupraDan24
The ES73 is only a cpl quid more on Play.com. At a guess i'd say it was the newer model of the ES71, thats purely based on the number tho. You could prob find one in pink on there. ES73 in Black I got my Gf one of these last year, and she absolutely loves it. Looks alot more "snazzy" as well, which is what girls like apparently. Bit more money, but she'll show it off more, which means more brownie points...oooooooo yeahhhh. http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/13868023/Fuji-Film-FinePix-AX280-14-Megapixel-5x-Optical-Zoom-3-0-inch-LCD-Digital-Camera-Pink/Product.html?ptsl=1&ob=Price&fb=0&searchstring=Fuji+film&searchtype=allproducts&searchsource=0&urlrefer=search

stevie_b
There's a Canon IXUS pink for sale on Amazon (black Friday) right now for £89.99. More than the one you posted up but being a Canon it might have a better lens...
Matt H
I went into Currys Digital and had a play with the cameras. I think the ES71 is still good value, but I was swayed towards these two: The first is another Samsung, and it has a nifty front screen, but the optical zoom is low. http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&q=samsung+pl100&safe=on&cid=9758715786660746181&ei=7qnzTIn_FZOu3QSgtbTCDg&sa=title&ved=0CAkQ8wIwADgA#p The other is a sony. certainly the bigger hitter but doesn't have that front screen which I think is a really neat idea. http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=sony+w320&hl=en&safe=on&cid=15861934988522807950&ei=cKrzTPS3D42K3AS1saDRDg&sa=title&ved=0CAkQ8wIwADgA#p Any thoughts? And it turns out she doesn't want pink.
Charlotte
I'd definitely swing towards the sony but I really like them.
Matt H
I'd definitely swing towards the sony but I really like them. I'm torn, if the Samsung didn't have the cool front screen there would be no question. I thought the reviews might deter me, but they seem really positive on boths sides. Lbm
Frankly Matt it's incredible the technology you can get for under £100. For me, after using it a few times, the front screen thing would be a bit of a gimmick, but it may be useful for your g/f's purposes. It's always nice to have a higher optical zoom capability though. And don't be fooled by 12 or 14 megapixels thing. It's all the same on a pc screen. So...basically flip a coin and go with either one
Matt H
Frankly Matt it's incredible the technology you can get for under £100. That is very true. It's always nice to have a higher optical zoom capability though. V.true and don't be fooled by 12 or 14 megapixels thing. It's all the same on a pc screen. Indeed, 12mp is apparently a full detail shot printed at A1 - according to the Samsung menu. So...basically flip a coin and go with either one . I think I'll go back today and have another play with them both and walk out with one of them...

As soon as you tell "uncle knobhead"(Thanks Peter Kay) to turn the front screen on by tapping it, he will press it to hard and break it. Or it will get broken on a night out. honestly: sold 3 of the original model and two were returned with smashed front screens. The other is a sony. certainly the bigger hitter but doesn't have that front screen which I think is a really neat idea. Of the two, this is the one to go for. http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=sony+w320&hl=en&safe=on&cid=15861934988522807950&ei=cKrzTPS3D42K3AS1saDRDg&sa=title&ved=0CAkQ8wIwADgA#p Any thoughts?
