jon_dragon
Earlier this year I suffered a blown head gasget I got the engine swapped but the heater matrix was full of gunk so I changed it for one I got off ebay *BIG MISTAKE* Turns out the cheap ebay ones dont fit (didnt see that coming) as a result when I took the car for a quick test run, one of the clips holding the plumbing onto the matrix had failed causing a massive coolant leak all over the passenger (sorry Jason) and the heater box. Ive since replaced the old matrix after a good clean out and the heaters now blow out warm air when the engine is warm as you would expect but only when Im moving! I cant control the heater at all, its always on warm but the illumination works on the controls however the lights that indicate what setting Im on do not. Ive replaced the heater control box above the stereo and the actual controls and also a little white box below the actual heater. The only thing left to change is the heater its self! Before I embark on taking the dash off again I wondered if anyone else has had the same problem and if changing the heater worked or if theres a much simpler fix. Another member I work with mentioned a switch or something on the top of the heater?
SupraShaun
There is a small metal arm In the passenger footwell that opens and closes the mixer flap, make sure this hasnt come unclipped.
stevie_b
It's possible the electronics in the dash panel controlling the heater are broken: I've read about it happening before, and IIRC it was cured by a replacement dash panel. Not sure how you'd test it though other than replacing it and see if it made any difference.
jon_dragon
Yeah that little metal rod is connected allthough its tough to move. Ive taken the top glove box off just now to see if there was anything untoward but I couldnt see anything. Think I might have to take it out and take a closer look one day. stevie_b
You might not be able to move it with your hands, but that might be normal. Does it move when the ignition's on and you turn the temperature dial from hot to cold or vice-versa? If it does, it's probably not that that's causing your problems. SteveC
Have a quick look here.
jon_dragon
Ah good find and thanks but thats not the issue. I cant control the heater at all. Cant turn it on or change the temperature. If you turn yours off then thats prety much what mines like all the time, even when I turn the knobs. Ive replaced the control unit and the control panel but still no joy
jon_dragon
as it happens after looking at those pictures it turns out my rod isnt in properly (oo err) anyway. lol
stevie_b
Was a poorly-inserted rod the cause of the problem? Have you had a chance to try it yet?
jon_dragon
Im gonna have a play with it this morning, ill let you know. I cant see how a mechanical problem would cause the control pannel not to work though...
Dnk
When you turn the dials they actuate servos, there is one in the center of the dash which is approx 6" into the dash and above the stereo, you'll need to remove the dash panel around the stereo to see it. I'll see if ive got a pic

jon_dragon
Ah yeah, thats what you can see when you take the top glove box out isnt it? Theres another one to the left that opens a hatch that lets you see right into the heart of the heater. @ the Steves - Ive pushed my rod fully in now but its still not doing anything. (is anyone else counting the inuendos in this thread?) I think Im going to have to fully replace the heater to make this work again :-( When the ebay matrix leaked there was water all over the place! Could have easily shorted something out. Ive checked all the fuses and theyre fine.
