Mike17
Hello! I have a very loud banging noise coming from somewhere on the back of the car. It started only as the car went round a corner to the right but is now starting to do it going straight as well, however not constant! You can feel in when it does it on the floor of the car as I'm sat in it but doesn't affect the steering at all. We have put it on a ramp and checked all four tyres and wheel bearings, the nsr has a tiny (and I mean millimetres) bit of play in it so we can change that but is that was is causing the loud banging?! It is not the exhaust which was solid as a rock... I've been told it could be cv joints?! Is this likely?! I have no idea what these are so any info would be awesome!! The car has 140km on the clock and is used every day so by no means a 'show' car! It has been off the road for a year having bodywork done so wandering if something has seized up while it's been sat for a year Has anyone come across this before? Any suggestions very gratefully received!!

richarde7927
As it started when you were turning , i would say the diff maybe . drop the diff oil into a clear container and see if there is loads of metel in the oil . Rich.
Guest lasneller
Double check the rear anti-roll bar. Could be knocking against dampers
Dnk
The CV joints are at each end of the driveshafts, between the diff and the hub. Does the banging alter with speed or if you brake ? Does the car still brake and accelerate without pulling to the left or right ? Did the wheels rotate freely ? 1 Milimeter of play is huge in a wheelbearing so im guessing you mean a chunk less than that Edited November 20, 2010 by Dnk (see edit history)
mrgee2jz
if its sounds a but like a train, you've broken your diff, done this a few times
dude
Make sure one of the rear calipers is not seizing up when it gets warm, just had one do this and sounded just like the diff was dead.
Mike17
Thanks for your replies dudes! It's definately not the wheel nuts they are all find so we can rule that one out...I'm just going to get it to a garage and ask them to have a look, it's all so complicated lol Don't suppose anyone can recommend a good garage around Bristol/Gloucester/Cheltenham/Cardiff way? Itsso difficult to find one that doesn't do a sharp intake of breath when they know it's an import lol
nevins
Had a similar problem with mine, there were a few possible causes that were all done at the same time. The garage left my spigot ring off, also check for play in your upper and lower arms. Also as dude said check if your callipers have a sticky piston. nevins
Come to think of it craig I need to borrow your ramp for 20 mins, got a nismo cat back to fit to the 14a. Edit, did you get a ramp after or am I thinking of someone else getting one lol
mrgee2jz
best way to test is get it up in the air and spin each wheel seperatly and see if it spins freely, then try it with it in park or in gear if its a manual. if the diffs broke youll get to a point where it starts crunching or getting stuck. if not you may feel the calipers binding. and have a look at the rear axle, your diff may be hanging off
Mike17
Wow you guys are so nice , thank you so much!! Where in Cardiff do you hang out? We've had a couple if problems with it since we've had it back on the road, the speedo is not working and the o/drive light randomly flashes for no apparent reason!! Neither me or my husband are any good at all with cars and people in garages seem to know this and scare us to death that the whole thing is going to self distruct and it'll cost a million pound to fix lol it's not really a very good car for us to own really but it's just so pretty lol
