Diff Cooler

A while back I had a problem with a leak with the diff cooling system then got some new pipes and it sorted it or so I thought. The pump for the diff only comes on when the fluid is at temperature and I don't usually do long journeys so the pump never comes on. Did a long journey yesterday and when I got back parked the supe up and went to sleep (COD first :eyebrows:). Got up this morning and wouldn't you know there is a tiny patch of gear oil sitting underneath the cooler. It is leaking in the same place as before so DNK you were right it was the cooler as all the pipes have been replaced :( I have taken my cars to a local trusted garage (close friend of the family) but obviously the supe is a bit more specialist and he didn't know the pump only worked when warm.

So questions:

1. Running out of diff oil = dead diff or worse?

2.Drawbacks of cutting the cooler out of the equation?

3. Where is the cheapest place to get a new diff?

4.Where is a trusted supe specialist close to chesterfield?

5. I take this means going to Newcastle tonight is a big NO NO?

I had my whole unit replaced when mine started leaking.. you sure it was just the pipes? Sounds like its not been fitted correctly or the cooler itself also needs replacing. That is the only part I've had to replace on my car due to age so far! (apart from the usual serviceable items)

Sorry didn't make it clear in my first post that it is the cooler that was leaking all along but the place I took it too changed the pipes first and it appeared to stop leaking, but this was because the pump only comes on when the fluid is hot and they obviously didn't driver it long enough to get the pump on to build up the pressure, if that makes sense :innocent:

  • 3 months later...

A few weeks ago I found a small puddle of oil infront of the offside rear wheel. I guessed it was the diff oil cooler. Whipped off the plastic shield. Both inlet and outlet pipes were so badly corroded at the rubber hoses it had sprung a leak. The local Toyota dealer and a trader here quoted £277+20% VAT! :( . So I asked a local firm Cheltenham Radiator if they could fix it. 4 days and £30 later, hey presto, just refitted the repaired cooler. They cut and butt welded both connections, pressure tested it, fixed the mounting plate and sprayed it black. Propah job!
