I know nothing about phones so after some help. I am currently with o2 who i have been with years and they seem to work wherever i am in the country.

My question is which should i get Nokia N8, iphone 3gs or 4?

Was thinking about switching to 3 as well as my mobile broadband seems to work in most places? What do people think??

Out of those options I would be going for the Iphone4.

Throwing others into the mix it would either be the HTC HD or the HTC DesireZ (Dependant on whether I wanted a keyboard lol)

No love for the BlackBerry Torch at all ? I'm also considering a new phone to replace my old Nokia...

We have one here at work, no really impressed at all.

Typical Blackberry phone and find the slide fiddly, nearly dropped it a couple of times opening it!

Iphone 3GS is brilliant in most respects, the 4 even better. Except if you want to actually make calls on them. The 3GS is poor and the 4 even worse.

I'm going for a 3GS purely because I've spent so much on apps. Were I in your position, it'd be Samsung Galaxy all the way.

I have now seen teh HTC desire, what do people think of those?

They are pretty good, Android phones have massively upped their game.

Check out the HTC desire thread.

They are amazing phones. The HTC Desire HD and the DesireZ are the latest versions. The HD has an HD screen & HD camera, the DesireZ has a keyboard that swings out from underneath.

Yep, my colleague has a HD and the quality is brilliant (Though a tad wide in the hand).

I've been using the N8 for a month or so now. I also have iPhone 3GS. iPhone is better as a browsing device, but voice call quality on the Nokia is EXCELLENT. Also the battery has been lasting days without recharge, my iPhone needs charging each and every day. Depends what you want - mostly voice calls, Nokia is and always has been, best for that. For surfing, Apple. Nokia committed to roll out changes for the N8 from now on, so it will get better. There is already a much better webbrowser coming, or maybe its already on the Ovi store, and I've tried Opera Mini too which is very good. HTC phones also have good reputation but I am not so up to speed on those.

I will be ordering a HTC Desire next time my contract comes up for a renewal. I have an iPhone 3Gs and can honestly say its the worst phone i've ever owned. The aerials on them are dire, soon as you walk into a supermarket or anything with 4 walls and a roof, you instantly lose signal, sometimes i'll have full signal but still wont receive calls. Don't even get me started on the battery life, or lack off which is more accurate. Its a good gadget, but as far as actually functioning as a phone, its pretty terrible. Go for anything except and iPhone IMO.

Comparison was a bad word, maybe just see how much better the iphone is then ;)

It isn't, and don't let any of the fanboi's tell you otherwise. The HTC is the far better handheld mobile device ;)

I could have any phone I want, I have an Ipod Touch as my toy and I love it, as a phone the HTC is better.

I have used Apple products way before they became hip hop, and when the first iPhone came out I brought it as it looked like a quality piece of kit and it is. I still have it but my little sister uses it and it works perfectly fine. Although I have to admit their are a lot of "fan boi's" and a lot of them know nothing about phones and just make claims without no insight.

I though am luckily get to play around with a number of different platforms. ;)

The HTC is good no doubt, but I feel the Android software still needs more tweaking, the Apple OS is a lot more swifter and more "fluid" like when processing data or feedback. The HTC also doesn't feel as well made as the Apple iPhone (3G or 4G) this for me was a big factor as the new HTC's are only slightly cheaper than the iPhones when purchasing off line.

My works fine as a phone even though it had a swim yesterday in some tea, I take it football & it lives a heavy lifestyle. I've dropped it a couple of times, apart from a very small crack at the top, you couldn't tell I dropped it while trying to load a car roof box. The battery is rubbish but to be honest what did I expect when I listen to almost 3 hours of music a day on it, making calls, checking all my updates, e-mails and downloading apps and updates through WiFi. Though I have found when I have a new toy and let the iPhone rest I can get through 3 days without charging it! :D

So hopefully my view isn't that baised. ;)

My only gripe with my HTC is the battery cover thing. The appear to have rectified that with the Z at least.

As for the software I totally disagree. The homepage layout on the desire is far far more handy than the Iphone layout. The new Sense OS features are absolutely fantastic and the fact that you can open it up and play around with it as you wish (software wise) is a MASSIVE + for me.

Different horses for different courses I guess.
