Can cctv in a workplace be used to watch workers behaviour or is it strictly just for loss prevention as in stealing ect

Also if a security guard is pursuing someone suspected of theft, then sees other workers behaviour can he then pass it on to management or is he not allowed to do so

the behaviour was football not violent ect and not with a football (with ball shaped polly)

On a search it says

Information obtained by CCTV is only to be used for prevention or detection of criminal activity, or the apprehension and prosecution of offenders. It should not be used for any other purpose.

And another site

Provided you can show that you are not using the camera to analyse the behaviour (and invade the privacy) of any one individual, then you are entitled to put a CCTV camera anywhere on your premises. If, for instance, the owner of a small newsagent installed a CCTV camera above the till and recorded everything to a tape in case of robbery, this would not usually be relevant to the DPA as it does note violate privacy.

Anybody with a clue would like to clear this up thanks

Ps: I keep misreading your username....

lol...

I suppose this depends what what behaviour are you referring to. If it is a criminal infringement of company policies I see no reason why the security guard can't forward the recording to relevant authorities. If it's some monkey-ing around in the workplace but is against company policy there is also nothing wrong with forwarding it to relevant authorities, it's just up to them to consider further action. I guess as long as the people are aware that there are surveillance in the area and that it is not in any way targetted specifically at the individual it should not violate any privacy laws. Don't quote me on that though!

Most people put up CCTV in the office for surveillance and security purposes. I don't see why they would install one just to monitor behaviour. Most of the time the person happened to be in the monitored area.
