Nic
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1329897/Early-Learning-Centre-toy-pig-banned-farm-set-avoid-offending-Muslims.html?ito=feeds-newsxml Had to laugh when I saw this yesterday in the news, would never have happened on my watch. I use to be head of design and development at ELC, the racially offensive pig in question was designed by one of my team.

Nic
I love the Daily Mail. It was on front page of a number of tabloids apparently. The pig in their Blossom Farm range was also sacrificed on ELC's religious altar for the same reason some years ago. That was some idiot in the Buying and Marketing teams idea, following a handful of complaints. http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/tq/30/139370930.jpg

Schtuv
They're not going far enough - they should remove all animals from the set and replace them with vegetables, so no vegetarians or vegans are offended! And what about cows in the set? Surely belittling a sacred animal by creating a chibi version in plastic to be chewed on by preschoolers isn't right ... *huff* Insensitive bar stewards *sigh*. supra_aero
Still can't get why a pig in a farm would be offensive? How? This article must be made up surely. There must be more to it than this
Matt H
Surely the person complaining shouldn't be buying a farm yard set in the first place; considering that pigs exist on farms and removing them from a play set doesn't change that. They should buy their kids a horse ranch instead; that way, if a pig pops up in the box, they would actually have decent grounds to complain about it. I personally think that the generic farm play set should be discontinued and replaced by pig farm play sets. Vouchers for a free pack of bacon should also be given out with the sets. tbourner
Still can't get why a pig in a farm would be offensive? How? Maybe if they had it hanging upside down with it's throat cut it'd be OK.
Matt H
Still can't get why a pig in a farm would be offensive? How? This article must be made up surely. There must be more to it than this It's because pigs are unclean animals to some religious types and they don't want anything to do with them. It's basically because they're bananas. To be fair though, it will only been the minority that would ever both complaining about such a trivial thing. The real issue at hand, which is a big problem in the grand scheme of things, is that people are listining to these select few nutters. tbourner
To be fair though, it will only been the minority that would ever both complaining about such a trivial thing. It was probably some non-Muslims that complained. We'll no doubt have some more self-fulfilling prophecies this winter with shops not showing the word Christmas because they believe it's been said somewhere that some people might have complained about something and they want to cover themselves, then the news will cover that, and more will follow etc. etc. People are stupid. And if you don't want it in the farm toss it in the bin. Ridiculous. I can't believe the toy shop even entertained such a thought.
Matt H
It was probably some non-Muslims that complained. I doubt it, but I guess it's not out of the realm of possibilities of some jobs-worths We'll no doubt have some more self-fulfilling prophecies this winter with shops not showing the word Christmas because they believe it's been said somewhere that some people might have complained about something and they want to cover themselves, then the news will cover that, and more will follow etc. etc. True, some places take it upon themselves to make changes even though no one has complained. Wasn't the Bull Ring in Brum a case of that? People are stupid. Some aren't.
Terminator
I read this yesterday, and thought it was a wind up. What happens to tolerance, it would appear that certain minority groups are totally ego centric and can't not understand the majority point of view and how dangerous it is to bring up kids who are intolerant of other views. It is a bloody toy FFS. Warning" Religion can seriously damage society". Nic with you background in toy design and marketing, do you think there may be an opening for a "Kill the piggy" board game"?
