Matt H
May be of interest to some. A few months ago I applied for my Council Tax banding to be reduced. It was a Band C, which I believed to be rather high for my property. I did my research and it showed properties in the surrounding area that would be of much higher value than mine to be the same band – one even lower. I put my case forward for a re-banding and I received a letter yesterday confirming the outcome. And... I was successful! My property has now been re-banded as B, which will significantly reduce my council tax bills per month I thought I would post it up as a lot of people were sceptical of whether I would get anywhere. But there we go; although it takes a while, it’s worth a go if you think you’re in the wrong band. Just make sure you do your research and can put a positive case forward. On another note, I do believe that it can go the other way if you’re simply trying it on!

Geo
nice one mate, Out of interest, how much you paying now?? Flat you got isnt it? Edit: rebate for what they have taken off you, since you have been re banded?
Matt H
nice one mate, Out of interest, how much you paying now?? Flat you got isnt it? Edit: rebate for what they have taken off you, since you have been re banded? Band C payments have been £106 per month on D/D. It's a 2 bed apartment in a large converted victorian home. There's 9 apartments in total. It's really nice, but mostly full of old folks! I'm sure I'll get a rebate as part of the application states when you think it should be applicable from. I stated from when the home was converted into the nine seperate dwellings 2 years ago, so I don't think they can argue with that. Nothings changed since. Banding is done purely on property value though, not type. I.e, you could be a single person living in a swankey 1 bed suite in the hilton and pay a shed load more than a family home somewhere. Pixelfill
how did you find out the banding and value of other local properties?
Matt H
VOA's site. It has every property listed. You can literally look at every registered property in the uk - scary actually.

Abz
Voa?? Think his referring to this website Chris, not the MOT centre chaps (Which I was thinking). http://www.voa.gov.uk/council_tax/cti_home.htm
Digsy
I reckon that local authorites try this on all the time - especaially with new properties. I got my two bed semi reduced from D (PMSL @ that) to C when I moved in. I reckon it should in fact be a B but I couldn't provide any evidence to support it. The council didn't even argue their case and lowered it when I sent the form in.
Chris Wilson
Thanks Abz, I had no idea what band we were in until just now. I think I'll let sleeping dogs lie, never had much luck with local authorities
Ian W
VOA's website doesn't seem to cover Scotland, only England and Wales.
Chris Wilson
Scotland has its own Parliament and laws in that respect AFAIK.
