wez_p
something i've noticed on my j-spec TT Auto is that when the car is cold in the morning, the sound of the #1 spooling up (don't think i ever drive with #2 on when cold) is noticeably louder than when it's warmed up a little does anyone else notice this? it doesn't sound like the death whine to me & it only seems to be when it's cold could it be the ceramics sounding different when they're cold? cheers, Wes p.s. if anyone's interested i could post up some sound files to show the comparison
penguin
um... are u pushing your turbo's wiithout letting them warm up for atleast a few miles? .... VERY bad idea.
Marco
I had that before my 1st turbo died! It was kind of high pitched whine, stopped when it warmed up. You might get a big bill soon! EDIT: could hear it already around 2500rpm. I always let everything warm up before flooring it...
Fifty
Air is denser when cold; thats all it is turn up the radio and stop worrying and enjoy the car

When my turbo's were replaced they didn't make that noise anymore, even in -10C!
Fifty
No I dont ignore it Im paranoid about it lol but I dont think hes really got a problem so was just trying to put him at ease, Fact is you cant diagnose a sound over a text forum can you?? and its most likely OK.
Terminator
I noticed a difference in sound on mine at start up, fours years later I just accept it. I went through the whole death whine paranoia stuff, and bought a spare set of tubbies just to be safe.
adi2009
Would it be worth getting a set of US/UK spec turbos just incase the J-spec fails in time.
Toms Supra
having an induction kit will make them louder!
wez_p
cheers for the replies guys @penguin - never push it when cold, it is literally just normal acceleration away @mFs - thanks for that, not what i wanted to hear but i have no probs with power, did you? @50 - this is what i'm most likely to do until i can sense some form of problem other than the noise @Terminator - this is what i was hoping for puts my mind at ease a little @adi2009 - cheers, but i ain't gonna buy something i don't need & i think i'd prefer to stick with japs, although i would more than likely get some hybrids or something if they did go rather than getting the standards again @Tom - yeah they DEFINITELY louder since the Apexi induction kit went on but i wasn't sure about them being louder when cold i'm gonna get a sound file done & then see what you all reckon

Toms Supra
have u heard the file on mkiv.com theres a sound file on there called death whine if it sounds like that then its time to worry!
Homer
- yeah they DEFINITELY louder since the Apexi induction kit went on but i wasn't sure about them being louder when cold Wez, its the aftermarket air intake that causes this. The rpm is raised by a large amount when the car is cold and I always hear the 'sucking' noise of the air intake when on idle. When driving its the same, the intake noise is much louder when the car is cold.
wez_p
nothing as gruesome as the deathwhine Tom @Homer - i think i'm a little more at ease with it now thanks cheers guys
supRo
Would it be worth getting a set of US/UK spec turbos just incase the J-spec fails in time. I thought the UK tubbies aren't a straight swap for the jap tubbies - you need other bits???? Apologies if I'm wrong!!

If you get it with the exhaust manifold they should bolt right up.
jagman
the clearances between the tips of the blades and the case on the turbo will vary due to thermal expansion, hence the noise difference,it is possible to keep these clearances constant, but the cost is prohibitive for a car application, also the air density as previously mentioned
Dash Rendar
Mine's the same. Louder spooling (kind of a whistle) when it's cold. I never boot it when it's cold, but even so, it's kind of hard to drive without #1 spooling at all. Paul K has driven my car and he hasn't expressed any concern. lpher
Mines had that slightly worrying sound when cold for about two years now...and ive had no turbofailure yet...knock on wood And had been said before...i dont push the turbo when cold either...but it is kinda hard staying below 2000rpm
Ben-san
Mines had that slightly worrying sound when cold for about two years now...and ive had no turbofailure yet...knock on wood Erm, did it sound something like 'wooOOoo' It doesn't happen all the time though. Eeek please tell me it's not what I think it is. >edited: Could be 'moosing'... worry over.
lpher
Erm, did it sound something like 'wooOOoo' Im not shure how to describe it...but as ive come to know the sound...i imagine its the #1 turbo getting a tiny bit less oilpressure than it wants when the engine is cold And..as said...ive had this sound for well over 2,5 years now...and its not getting any worse Might have something to do with the fact that im VERY sensitive on the pedal the first few minutes everytime er start the car So i thought about getting a spare set of turbo's...just in case
