supRo
Just wanted to find out what engines they have - I'm sure it's a Rover 2.0L turbo. But someone in my company is saying it's a Honda 2.0L turbo engine. I looked at the engine - doesn't look like a Honda engine and I don't think Honda does turbo engines/not recently????? I've looked on the web...Does anyone know? Cheers, Ro
ADD
i was under gthe impression they were honda engines, but i think it all depends on the year of manufacture
wez_p
as far as i know all the 2.0litre turbo engines in the 200, 400, 600 & 800 range were the Rover T16 engine well known for head gasket maintenance required but as long as you go for the 'klinger' 3 part metal gasket & regularly maintain the engine it should be good power for the money these cars go far, even with the boost turned up a little bit i had the 620ti (2.0litre turbo) and it was a great mix of comfort with power, whilst i was saving for the Supra

paulfurn
as far as i know all the 2.0litre turbo engines in the 200, 400, 600 & 800 range were the Rover T16 engine well known for head gasket maintenance required but as long as you go for the 'klinger' 3 part metal gasket & regularly maintain the engine it should be good power for the money these cars go far, even with the boost turned up a little bit i had the 620ti (2.0litre turbo) and it was a great mix of comfort with power, whilst i was saving for the Supra Ill second this. I used to have a Rover with a T16 engine, and it was only the T16 engines that had the turbo's as far as I am aware. I also went for a Klinger, but the damn mechanic forgot to take out a restrictor located by the 4th cylinder (which you are allegdly supposed to remove when fitting the klinger - if Id used a standard one "Rover" one Id have been okay) which meant that the leak opened up again and I had the same problem. Said mechanic sadly disappeared after this into a new unit elsewhere in town (nothing shady about it - dont get me wrong!) by the time I took it back. As far as Im aware the T16's were in Rover 220 coupes and vittesse cars of 1994 and 1995 (thats all I personally know of) and perhaps early 96 (though I *think* they changed the engine to the variable valve 1.6 and 1.8 models from Aug onwards). I think the Honda was only used 92-early 94. Then from August 94 the T-series was introduced. I still have my Rover and its done 138,000 miles and still working! There is a yahoo group - "rover-coupe" (with oblique) - that is very useful and an excellent resource if you want a properly definitive answer! The Hornet
Don't know about the little 2litres, had a couple of the 827 Sli's 2.7 V6's with K series engines. Nice old cars they was and they only cost me £400 to buy then run of 6 months. gave me fun while saving for cars when was younger
wez_p
http://www.rovertech.net is the place the Performance Rover Group are putting a team in for TOTB again this year, after a T16 powered Tomcat Coupe won the top speed run last year for the FWD class don't know if people already know but the standard turbo Coupe does 0-60 is about 5.5secs, not bad for a 2 litre with 1 turbo compared to our 3 litre with 2 turbos eh?! and they have a lot more room in the back
supRo
Yes, i know some of the N/A engines are honda but this guy who owns it is making out it's got all sorts of mods and can give my BPU TT a run for the money - looked at his engine - looks all standard! He's saying it's a Honda 2.0 turbo but it doesn't look like any honda engines I've seen...you don't get Honda turbo'd civics, preludes, accords, or even NSX's. I wouldn't have thought Honda would develop a engine specifically for Rover. The honda engines in the Rover are the exact same ones as the honda own brand range as far as I know. The honda engines in the Rover are the exact same ones as the honda own brand range as far as I know. unless there are internal mods like forged pistons then i'd be a little wary if it's really that quick - doubt it would last long normal tricks are the usual, improved induction, decat, maybe 3" exhaust pipework & up the boost (shouldn't be more than about 12.5psi on standard internals) advanced mods i think would be tubular manifold, upgraded cams, front mount intercooler (say from a modded Pulsar top mount one) and a T28 instead of the standard T25 turbo BUT, standard i would be estimating a 7secs 0-60 with around 200BHP, so how he has made it anything near a BPU Supra without going VERY silly with what's been spent on it, i don't know! get a list of mods for us

TrickTT
My brother in law used to have one of those, can't comment on reliability cos he parked it in a ditch 3 weeks after he got it but be aware it handles like a barge.

garethr
IIRC, the Rover turbo is the odd one out, descended from the old BL O-series (Maestro/Montego) , nothing to do with Honda.

supRo
It's definitely a Rover manufactured 2.0 turbo "Rover had developed further improvements to the turbo 2 litre engine for the 200 Coupe and the new engine was introduced to the 800 series as the Vitesse Sport" I just wanted to make sure the guy who owns it is talking bollocks. He did say that he followed me home one day to see how his performs against mines...I was totally unaware of this!! Maybe I should worry too! Thanks for the info guys. Let me find him on the road and I'll teach him a lesson!
