CJ
I have a problem with my external speakers on my PC. For some time I have only had sound coming from one speaker and so I changed them last week for a new set only for the new ones to be the same. I have checked the settings (well, as far as I can see) and they seem to be set up for right and left output but it doesn't happen. Could it be the connection in the back of my PC? Any help and advice gratefully received.
stevie_b
If you didn't re-use any components from one speaker set to the next, I guess the problem must be a sound card/sound chip fault, or a balance setting in Windows. In WinXP, to check the balance go to Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > Advanced: ensure the balance sliders are in the middle for each volume slider. Edit: do you have on-board sound or a dedicated sound card?
The-Plethora
A couple of suggestions 1. Are they plugged into the green audio out on the sound card / onboard? Some cards use other ports for 6 / 8 speaker setups. 2. You don't mention the type of sound card but some has software that allows configuration of the ports to act as something else. Maybe your port has been configured to output part of a multispeaker setup rather than 2/1 audio 3. In the cntrol panel sound optios have a look at playback devices and check it's not something simple like accidentally changing the L / R audio balance. 4. Could always try uninstalling the device and driver and re-installing with default settings. I would be suprised if there is anything physically wrong with the output. CJ
I run Windows 7 and have checked the balance. When I just output one side it is fine but switching to the other gives me nothing. When I pull out / put in the jack plug on the rear of the PC I get a crackle (is that the right word?) from the "dead" speaker but no actual sound thereafter. As for on board / dedicated, I am not sure. How would I check this?

Is that in control panel too? 3. In the cntrol panel sound optios have a look at playback devices and check it's not something simple like accidentally changing the L / R audio balance. I looked at this and the levels are both set to 100% 4. Could always try uninstalling the device and driver and re-installing with default settings. I would be suprised if there is anything physically wrong with the output. I tried the test function and I am getting a very low output from the one speaker - but definitely something. I dont understand why though as all the levels are set to 100% for both sides.
