System of a Down

I went to see SOAD in Manchester last night and it was probably the best concert I've attended, however the support band sucked ass... I have no idea who they were though as I couldn't understand a word the singer was saying and the tickets just said "plus guests" - did anyone here see them in Brixton or elsewhere and if so do you have any idea who supported them?

:thanks:

I'd urge you to buy the current album "Mezmerize" in that case, it's a little bit more upbeat and melodic in places compared to the older stuff due to Daron doing a lot more vocal stuff but it still has the usual assortment of humour and heavy riffs, well worth a listen :)

Anyway I'll answer my own question having now had a look on some forums :)

It was "80's Matchbox B-line Disaster" - they tried very hard but their energy was far in excess of their talent, especially the 'Elvis at 33rpm' singer.

The concert was at the MEN, in my opinion it was too big for SOAD to really get themselves across, a smaller venue over two nights would have been ideal but despite this it was an amazing experience.

You can listen to a few new tracks on their site:

"It came from a poem our guitarist, Daron, had written, called 'Victims of a Down,'" explains Serj. "He brought it to us, and 'System' was chosen as a better, stronger word, and it makes it into a 'whole,' instead of the people in particular, it's the society."

This Nu-Metal stuff leaves me cold. Give me proper hardcore punk every time. Oh, and Fugazi.

They aren't really Nu Metal though - they only get branded in that way because they released their album when the whole crappy nu metal thing took off. "Alternative metal" is a far more appropriate tag but even then it doesn't cover the massive range they have adopted, how many nu metal bands would have been worthy enough to tour with Slayer?

Punk is simply a way for people with limited talent to get up on a stage and mash instruments, it's like freeform jazz with distortion and spit.

A somewhat blinkered and mis-informed view but not an unusual one. I'd always prefer to listen to a band that played with passion despite any preceived lack of musical virtuosity than any major label rock acts filling cavernous, corporate sponsored barns.

But each to their own right?

Michael,

I know what you mean about liking a band that exceeds all the pigeon-holes that they are put into.

I love a band called Fugazi. I have a site about themthat I've kept running despite the fact that they may never tour or record again. The members of that band have between them been the catalyst of Straight Edge hardcore and at the forefront of *cough* Emo back before it was even called that and the music they make now is not being made by anyone else.

Yet, people still call them a hardcore band or insist on referring to the members previous bands as though it was, somehow, still relevant. It is so limiting, in my opinion.

Guest thethom

i was at the download festival at the weekend and saw the system live. it was amazing(apart from being freezing) and finished off a top quality weekend(slayer, therapy, lamb of god) to name but a few awesome bands that trully rocked and my only dissapointment is that theres another year to wait for the next one

There are many, many bands who embody a modern punk ideal that sound nothing like you'd think a punk band should sound.

To me, punk is a way of conducting yourself in the world at large and cannot just be attributed to a musical style.

Im a fan of System as well, love the new album. easily the ebst one they have done. And on the subject of green day, i agree they are going a bit too Poppy but ive seen em 4 times live now, most recently in Feb, and believe they only get better live. Get yourself up on stage when they ask for volunteers if you play any instrument. I was desperate to get on playing guitar but they picked someone over t'other side of arena. Awsome live though. Wish id got tickets for System last night. Bet it was an awsome gig as well.

On a different note my fav new band is Trivium. If no-ones heard them i would highly recommend them. Unbelievably heavy, deep-throat (ooh er) vocals in the verses and gorgeous singing in chorus. I love em. but not in a :limp: way.
