NA Manifold..

Monkpower

Recommended Posts

Hello people!!

Yes i'm a newbie and just wanted your opinion. I've got an NA Supra (95) yes, yes before you say 'put a turbo lump in it etc etc' I'm happy with my NA. ;)

Just seen this manifold - ab88 Autobahn 88 Exhaust Manifold Header Toyota Supra NA JZA80 Non Turbo

Does anyone know how good these are or of the reputation of the website?

If you have any better advice regarding stainless manifolds then please help.

Thanks.

Couple of pics of the tubular manifold I use to make (not being made at the moment), it increased power by around 8-12hp and made the car feel more responsive. This like the Autobahn one replaces the stock cast manifolds and the first catalytic convertor.

I have no experience of the Autobahn manifold, but a lot of the ones on the market are designed to fit a left hand drive US Supra, there can be fitment problems on a RHD Supra with the manifold hitting the steering column. Also check that the bosses for the oxygen sensors are the standard 2 bolt type, as some manifolds have screw in bosses which won't fit the stock oxygen sensors.

Note fitting a tubular manifold will also increase the noise level of the exhaust, if you've no cats fitted, have a loud exhaust and fit a tubular manifold it will be ear bleedingly loud.

This pic shows the stock cast manifolds and the first catalytic convertor next to a tubular manifold. On the pic of the cast manifold you can see the hole and 2 threaded holes either side of it where the oxygen sensor fits.

This pic shows the space between the steering column and the manifold, this is one of mine and was designed specifically for a RHD Supra. As I mentioned before there can be fitment issues with some manifolds designed for a LHD Supra hitting the steering column. You can also see the 2 bolt bosses for the oxygen sensors in this pic.

But you can control the sound. My manifold, decats and exhaust were custom made by a local company and it's no louder than the stock system (possibly very slightly). I'll find out on 14th what increase I've got when I shove it on an RR. :D

Yes the key is to have an exhaust with enough silencing - the straight through manifolds and decats will all be similar in terms of noise level. Fit a cat back exhaust designed for a TT with larger diameter piping and just a single rear muffler on an NA and it will be very loud. Fit a cat back exhaust specifically designed for an NA which usually has narrower diameter piping and twin mufflers will help keep the noise down.

I had the autobahn manifold and had no problems apart from having to mill out the stud holes in the header face. Be warned there is a company posing as autobahn88 and ripping people right off with the manifolds that they sell, they are the wrong size, shape, lambda ports are screw in not flanged and very poor quality with missing welds. Welsh stealth can vouch for this when he wanted me to fit his for him.

Yes the hole alignment with the studs can be an issue.

The alignment of the flanges of the manifold can also be an issue ie. if the surface of the 2 flanges that bolt onto the head aren't aligned squarely, torquing down the flanges can cause stress on the welds and also if badly out, it may not be possible to get a seal between the manifold, exhaust gasket and head.

Thanks for all of the advice peeps.

I'll think i'll wait for Whifbitz to sort an NA manifold...

On to my next query, I imagine the mnifold will get rid of the first cat..so will it still pass n MOT with one cat?

Yes it should pass with no cats.

It will remove the 1st cat yes, I sell a 2nd decat pipe already so at MOT time you can just put your 2nd cat back in if required.

I have fitted an Autobahn88 exhaust manifold onto my N/A.

The gasket face needed planing by 4mm, and all of the ports and some of the stud holes needed matching.

The planing was £20 and the port matching at no cost.

Bearing in mind the manifold only cost £60 new, now sorted out it is very good.

Pics show all in my garage and 'Evolution' album.

N/A's do NOT need a cat to pass MOT, details in link.

Earlier this week, I removed the stock exhaust and 2nd cat from my N/A and replaced them with a S/S 3" freeflow exhaust (off a TT) and 2nd decat, the exhaust was so loud that I couldn't bear it and today I put the cat back on, now it's much better (but still quite loud!) :)
