Suprab1
Can someone please help? I came home today to find my living room flooded. I went upstairs & the expansion tank was burst where a pipe goes into the side near the bottom. The thing that worries me is the tank was red hot. Should an expansion tank heat up with the rads or is something wrong?
SUPRALOOPY
Here is an Idea. If your front room is flooded "CALL OUT A PLUMBER" I know this forum is good for advice but your front room is full of water FFS!! ;0)
Suprab1
I have called a few plumbers none will call out untill tomorrow or saturday. I've turned the water off so it's not getting any worse. I just wanted to know should the expansion tank get hot? So i sound like i know what i'm talking about when he comes out. edge
If you mean the tank in the loft then no. Or do you mean expansion vessel? you on a combi system or gravity?
Ian W
If you mean the tank in the loft then no. Or do you mean expansion vessel? you on a combi system or gravity? I'd imagine he does mean expansion vessel. And yes, it can get hot afaik. EDITed to add: When I say hot, I mean to touch. Not capable of giving you 3rd degree burns
Havard
The expansion tank should not get hot. Maybe warm (30 - 40 deg) but not hot. It sounds like you either have a blockage or a valve has failed somewhere? I can't see how the expansion has damaged an open vented system? Bailey.
Worth getting checked out mate,'shouldn't be hot, was it over flowing bud? Most headers rarely change water level tbh!
comorin219
is it an expansion tank or is it a hot water cylinder, ie made of copper & insulated
Bailey.
Will be gravity to have a header!
Havard
I am now thinking hot water cylinder?

Bailey.
Could be a combi cylinder!
Suprab1
If you mean the tank in the loft then no. Or do you mean expansion vessel? you on a combi system or gravity? There is 3 tanks in the hot press (dormer bungalow none up the loft), the big copper tank, the cold water tank & this small plastic tank with copper pipes that just hang over it like taps if you know what i mean? All i know is the plumber just done alot of work here a couple of month ago & changed a ballcock in that tank which he called the expansion tank. What do you mean combi or gravity? Bailey.
Have a feed to the cylinder from the bottom of the header mate!
Harry Sachs
Can we see a pic of the tank?
Suprab1
Waw thanks for the replys It's a black plastic tank & it was just burst not over flowing. But it gets so hot that the whole hot press steams up & then i'm left with a lot of condensation on the outside of the cold water tank. Suprab1
Ok i'll get pics.
Suprab1
Here's a few pics. It might be hard to see but up the top left of pic 1 (where the copper pipe bends) is where the tank that burst was sitting if that helps. Pic 2 is pipes that went into the top of the tank, pic 3 is pipe that went into bottom of the tank & last 2 are the tank & where the pipe burst out of it. Bailey.
In the second pic it doesn't look like it's burst more like it has blown the fitting off?
Bailey.
Scrap that bad iPhone pic quality, looks like the tank was at fault??
Suprab1
Yeah the pipe that goes into the tank burst out. But around the pipe the tank is very brittle, could this be down to the heat of the water?
comorin219
im assuming the the tank is cold water fed having a ballcock, can you not pop out &get a new tank, guessing there is only 2 connections cold in cold out. Then get a plumber to check out the system
edge
Is that a metal tank? as it looks like its rotten at the pipe area. Get a nice plastic one in. It should not get hot as its just an overflow from the hot cylinder and supply to the hot water cylinder below. make sure the the pipe that goes from top of hot cylinder and bends over into the top of the tank (hot expansion pipe) is not in the water and is just over it a few inches. How hot do you have your water? Should be about 55 - 60 deg c roughly. The system you have is called a gravity fed system a the pressure is only as high as the tank (0.1 bar p/mtr)
Harry Sachs
I can't make out wether the tank is metal or plastic either lol. What I'm thinking is that the hot water is possibly boiling over and escaping via the expansion pipe, causing the water to heat up.......I can't really think of any other feasable explanation A new tank won't cost you too much either, I recenlty swapped over a storage tank for Scott M and he got it via ebay cheap as chips. Might be worth a PM.
