Advice needed, someone wanting to buy my dad's Jag

Hi all!

My dad has his '07 plate Jag X Type sport premium for sale, it's advertised on Pistonheads and Autotrader.

He's had a couple of obvious scammers "interested" and has ignored them, but today he received an email from Pistonheads today which sounded pretty genuine.

The guy was asking some general questions, was the car still for sale, did the car have FSH, V5 etc.

But then he went on to ask for the registration number (it's on almost all of the pics! ) and the chassis number  That for some reason sent alarm bells ringing for me, he said these details were for an HPI check....

I told my dad just to glaze over the chassis no. part as if you hadn't read it, but the the guy replied asking what the V5 serial number was, The V5 issue date, and the mileage of the car (again, mileage is in the ad!) for an HPI check

He then finished by asking what payment method he would accept.

My dad hasn't replied yet as he's never been asked for such extensive details and he was a little unsure of what to do.

I told him not to reply til I'd spoken with you guys, the only bit I could answer was the payment part.

I'd ask for cash or bankers draft and ask the guy to follow me to the bank so it could be checked and deposited.

What do you think?

I wouldn't give him any of those details.

Has he asked about the condition of the car and how flexible your Dad would be on the price etc as those are the questions most genuine people would ask?

I would do the same.
