Homeplug question

Thinking of upgrading my homeplug but do have a question. I currently connect my router modem straight to the BT master socket and I then use homeplugs to connect it to my upstairs PC.

At the moment I am experiencing around 5-10% drop in connection speed (compared to if I connect directly via ethernet to the router modem). Both homeplugs are plugged directly into the power sockets and not using extensions.

I don't use the homeplugs occasionally to stream movies from server to PS3 etc. I wonder if buying the newer more expensive homeplugs would make a difference ie make things faster? I am using a Devolo 75mbps Homeplug atm.

In short, if you upgrade to the 200mbps units you should see an improvement

I use the Zylex 200mbps homeplugs and never had an issue.

The indicated speeds are a bit of con, much like the speeds on xDSL as it should really read upto 75mbps and upto 200mbps. The max speeds are only really achievable in a lab environment, however the faster 200mbps unit should give you better performance than your old 75mbps units.

Right, time for upgrade then :p Mine is rated @ 75mbps

Whilst on this topic I would like to ask another question : My mobo has 2 built in gigabit ethernet port (Marvell Yukon) and I am running side by side speedtest with my laptop which has 1 gigabit ethernet port.

My laptop gives consistent results of around 6.5mbps but my desktop is giving erractic results. It is sort of like "burst" results if you know what I mean (using speedtest.net). I am trying to tweak some advanced settings but doesn't seem to make a difference.

Any opinion on this?

edit: Wow...up to 100 quid for decent homeplugs (and I need 3...) don't know if that's worth the extra 5-10% :p Will continue to do some tests to see if there's any other way...

No, as I don't want to waste £70 if they don't work.

When I first read about them it said they had to be on the same circuit. I have 2 seperate breakers for upstairs and downstairs.

I have five of them in my house and only two are on the same breaker but the wiring in my house and distribution unit is fairly old.
