Ceptik
Next to the driver's tweeter, there's a half sphere poking out of the dash. What's that do?
stevie_b
I don't think the "tweeter" is actually a speaker mate. I *think* the half sphere is a sunshine sensor (others will correct me if I'm wrong), and the tweeter lookalike is a air vent.
Alex
Must have been a full year since this question was last asked! must be a record! It's a sun sensor for the aircon.

Seb
The dome is a solar sensor (wooo), so the air-con, when set on auto, can figure out how hot it is in your car and adjust the temperature.
Ceptik
so am i right in saying that if one was to shine a torch on it the aircon/climate control will turn up?

Ian C
The "tweeter" doesn't actually have a speaker behind it as far as I recall - maybe UK spec ones have them there though? -Ian

JustGav
Erm, they do have tweeters in them, they are just a bastard to change... The proper way to change them is to take the dash off and change them from the inside since the tweeter is actually glued to the grill and you break them everytime you take the grill off... If you are replacing them with aftermarkets then you can just pull them off.. Gav
Ian C
Maybe I'm thinking of my old Granada lol I can't recall taking the dash apart enough to see them properly actually. -Ian
lpher
No its not that hard taking them out "the right way" ..and that is WITHOUT taking half the car apart Have a look at this thread: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=32074&highlight=tweeters Did this mod a couple of years ago...and made a small write-up about it...just to clarify a thing or two for the guys at supraforums.com ...and too those who still aint convinced...lets say you dont want to ruin the stock tweeter...ill say this...toss the stock speakers..they are just rubbish! How Toyota dared to put such lousy sounding speakers in a car in this pricerange is beyond me
supra steveo
If they do, I bet they're awkward to change! yes it is a speaker ive allready replaced mine, it was a bit of a git bit once you do one side the other side is easier, there is that tought in the back of your head that you are going to brake something but youve just got to be firm with them

Ian C
How can you search for solar sensor, when you dont know what it is though? Search for something like "Also known as: "the round dome thingy on the top of the dashboard"" That's why I put in the "also known as" heading, in an attempt to catch the generic description of the item. Ok, I missed off 'blob' -Ian
Aerotop Dave
Should point out that not everyone will have the tweeter behind that grill - only UK and J spec GZ models. Everyone else should only have the four speaker system fitted as standard.

Aerotop Dave
If you haven't got the 7 speaker system then there shouldn't be anything behind there. Maybe Toyota fit a blanking plate or something (I guess there would be a hole down into the dash otherwise). Everyone has the grill, just not everyone has the speaker! Matt Harwood
Actually ALL Supra's have the tweeters. The only difference with the audio is on JDM GZ models which have a bigger amp and a sub in the boot. Not even the almighty UK spec got that! As for the dome, blob, solar sensor... Anyone know exactly what it does? Prize for the first one to get it right
Aerotop Dave
Awwww, ffs, another difference I need to record on my model differences Excel chart then! But the J spec brochures all talk of a four or seven speaker system - there's no mention of a six speaker system.

Prize for the first one to get it right It senses direct sunlight on the windscreen and uses it to adjust the air conditioning - and it works too. I went into a tunnel in France and the aircon fan dropped two speeds almost immediately, and responded again on exiting the tunnel, cranking the fan speed back up again. Where's my prize -Ian
