Neil-NA
I really want to get back into some sort of martial art after nearly 15 years out. I really want something thats a contact sport, but i have to watch out for hits to the face, not because im such a handsome chap infact i have a face that when i walk down the street makes small babies cry but thats not the point, basically i have had bad eye problems in the past and have sufferd from detatched retinas etc so need something where i cant get hit in the face. Is there any such thing i can look at.

hodge
In a word no. Maybe judo but you have to think about strangles etc is it going to put unessessary pressure in your eyes. Apart from that your face is going to get battered it's unavoidable really. I've had it since I was ten and find it character building. Thought that might be the case, but i cant afford to loose my sight again, suppose i could always do the training and give the fighting a miss.........or find a really short person who cant reach my face. Benyon
Alright neil, I know a few cage fighters that are your sort of weight. If I was you I would consider BJJ or other groundwork style's But I wouldnt risk anything toe 2 toe. I wouldnt even think about semi contact, Your eyesight comes first. How bout proper wrestling? Not too sure what to look at now mate, might just do the training then go for some drunken fighting in Bolton, its about time the bouncers got an arse kicking again, you up for it lol

Could you settle with weight lifting? Offcourse we can rush some bouncers but wait till christmas then they all carry the tip buckets and we can rob'em at the same time. add heywood
The are loads of semi contact places all over the place now, if you have a retina problem I would look for something else to get into tbh. With the grappling arts you would have to be carefull of any takedowns and banging your head on the floor... If you really want to get back into MA try tai bo or some MA fitness classes or similar. Or pretend you a girl and come to my ladies only classes I teach, half of them are too scared to break a nail sometimes

Abz
This is quite difficult Neil as most of these 'Sports' is pretty much contact based. Do you want to get back into it for the love of doing a contact sport or is it more for wanting to make sure you haven't lost touch incase the Bolton Massive attack you? What about Wing Chun? I am currently trying to learn it, just got the very basics from two colleagues who do it and looking to get into training classes in the next couple of months. It really isn't a sport and you can't really spar with it as its aim ground really is to finish or disable an opponent or threat. Here is a little taster: xlRPDhuX1DY

Lbm
Oh and LBM might have some good advice, he is a man in the know I know nothing Ok, I think the Wing Chun thing could be a good idea and I'm a massive fan of it. But...you'd have to make sure some overtly keen beginner doesn't punch you in the eye, even by accident. Equally, as with any martial art, sometimes some instructors can be just a bit too aggressive - this is normally the case if they're not that skillful, or they merely have psychotic tendencies...As you know, you must look after your eyes. I would personally go to a variety of clubs and styles and see what kind of vibe you get, and if any psychos are attending - ...avoid. Consider Tai Chi too. This is an incredible art if you can find someone who knows what they're doing

Neil-NA
Cheers guys you have given ,me alot to think about. I wanted something different to weight lifting as its boring, same with the bike riding, it was only when talking to the MRS about that Alex Reid pr*ck that the convo popped up about MA and i was saying how i would like to get back into it but cant take many impacts to the face (or rather wouldnt risk it). I think i am just going to look at it as a fitness base and find something i like, i dont want something that is mindless, something with a bit of skill would do. Oh and i'm liking the sound of the lady classes, are they quite erm 'hands on'
stevie_b
I wouldn't risk full-contact if I were you. It's not worth risking blindness for. As you said in your last post, best to find something that you can fully participate in. Semi-contact maybe, but even then you'd have to go careful. In your situation I wouldn't do semi-contact either.

In the semi-contact class I used to go to I regularly got my @rse handed to me by the ladies.
Lbm
Alternatively take up boxing and just wear goggles Eh? How would this stop a retina becoming detached...again? I can believe it.
