electronics for NA-T conversion input pls :)

HI all , im 90 % through my mechanical side of a NA convesion with a xspower kit ( yes the cheap one ! , cost was important to me !)

 

My car is a 93 jap spec NA - auto , stock everything , i would like to get running with this kit on , i know im restricted with the injectors and transmission / diff ect but im sure its all ok upto around 350 bhp , then make some more upgrades .

 

Im a bit of a noob but been having some help with my mechanically minded freind plus been using NA-T forums for pointers .

 

The electronic side is something im unsure of and most of the people in usa doing these use a safc 2 and a maf ? I have got my hands on a safc 2 and now need to know what else i need , if im going to follow them i need a maf ? or something else ? the reson i ask is i would like some input on how its done and what people would recommend this side of the pond .

 

This may sound a silly question but would the car run after the mechanics are done ? what do i need to be carefull off ?

ditch the safc and get a piggyback that controll the injectors and set a clamp on the boost cut.

 

the us spec cars have maf. (mass airflow sensor)

 

jdm cars have map (manifold abloute pressure)

 

the safc is really no good to you. you will be able to start the car on the stock ecu but dont drive it or even consider boosting.

 

with out a piggyback ecu such as a aem fic , or a greddy emanage the car will flack out and cut fuel as soon as the map sensor see posotive pressure ie boost.

 

the piggyback ecu can resrtict the stock ecu from seeing the boost and then can accordingly increase the injector duty cycle to avoid running lean and thus melting your motor.

 

get the mechanics done. get a suitable piggyback ecu fitted and give it to a pro mapper. dont try and do it yourself to save money or it will end up costing you a fortune or even your car.

 

 

another good pice of equiptment to buy is a wideband afr guage. afr or air fuel ratios are crucial to the cars performance and even more important to the engines life. to lean and youll melt it, yoo rich and you wash the cylinders and get hevy ring and bore wear.

 

but as said you can start it on idle to check oil pressure and look for leaks ect befor it goes to be mapped.

i think your spot on there craig , im gonna try and get a tuner involved now and tell them my plans for the car and let them tell me what equippment they want to work with :)

 

 

Also for those asking it was a t-61 turbo kit and ive spent around £1500 to date ...

hi , thought i would come with some update

 

 

i have finished most of mechanics now , i had to change distributor cap for a four runner so i could keep 4" intake , fitted blow off valve , fitted new radiator fans...

 

all i have left to do is wait for my turbo blanket to arrive , and my new bigger air filter ...

 

Car runs really suprisingly well as i havent done any electrics yet , had to do a test run :) felt a bit of boost and heard the BOV working :) that was enough ....

 

I have inded sort the services of ryan g and i have an emanage blue to have installed and fingers crossed it will be getting mapped on thurday ....

Okay car was mapped today by ryan at surrey rolling road , 349.4 BHP ( 290ish) at the wheels , did say as im running auto box figures would be slightly higher , if i had a scanner i would up some pics of graphs :(

 

 

thanks for the input guys , and also craig i was running your map on the way to dyno :)

 

 

2 grand spent to date all in , 210 standard so now i have 350 bhp areotop , as it was an areotop i thought it was worth the spend as shes clean :)

not sure exctally which one , he told me it was yours but not too go too mad on the gas ! , Im running just over 0.5 bar / 7 psi roughly , not a lot but its deffo more than i had before :)

 

tbh , i have learnt a lot and would have no worries swaping turbo over ect further down the line but for now im happy :)

Nice results for such little outlay :thumbs: keep us posted on reliability, as apparently some of the XS kit is questionable. Did Ryan have any comments on the setup?

 

I think you need to get some pictures of the car up now it's done :)

 

Yeah thanks , ryans words was " youve done really well " i know its only a basic kit but for the cash i dont think its bad , i know i may need replacement mani , turbo but for now its good and i dont drive it everyday athough now maybee i will find myself out in it more ! :)

 

Wrong time of year tho , put my foot down , the auto droped down and i could feel the wheels spinning at the rear end ! :)

 

Yes now its finished I will get it cleaned and post some finished decent pics up :)

Yep spot on your map was just to get me running till we got to rolling road :)

 

yeah i may look to do a meeting somewhere maybee halfway ish between us :)

 

yeah i have been reading that the high compression works well up to 350 bhp !
