Tricky-Ricky
I watch downloaded AVI films from either a HDD plugged into my PS3 or via a network storage HDD, and although the film are not bad quality, the darker or night scenes are always too dark to see whats going on and have a lot of noise. Is there any way to rectify/improve this? Even if i convert them to another format its still the same?

Graham S
Where do you get your AVI's from? I keep all mine on my HTPC and use a program called TVersity to stream them directly to the PS3. Still trying to find a way to get the PS3 to stream .MKV's though as alot of my stuff is in HD.. Anyway, using TVersity, it has a perfect picture quality, seeing as my HTPC is downstairs and my PS3 is upstairs in my bedroom (so the kids can't touch it!) and shows as well as it does on my big TV downstairs. Yup, Tversity is a superb upnp server for exactly that purpose, it supports transcoding as well (ie adjusts the stream to suit the PS3) http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&source=hp&biw=1440&bih=630&q=tversity+ps3+transcoding&aq=6&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=tversity+ps3+trans&gs_rfai=&fp=dce11f9f82e06f87

The PS3 cant play MKV containers, you have two options, enable transcoding as Gav mentioned which is done on the fly, this would depend on the spec of the device running TVersity, if its an ATOM powered NAS for example you have no chance. The second option is a program called MKV2VOB which will repackage your MKV into a PS3 friendly container, you also have the option to transcode DTS so that if you dont have any DTS decoders (the PS3 isnt one) you wont just get static for sound The 2nd option is the preferred method

Basically, one in MKV and the other is PS3 friendly something or other?
Scott
I never use anything other than PS3Mediaserver, it's absolutely fantastic and streams/transcodes absolutely everything. However, the issue with your AVI's won't be down to any of that. I can only guess that you are getting very rough cams or something like that. Try a proper DVD Rip and see what it's like. If you want to keep two copies, most other media players will play the AVIs produced by MKV2VOB, the only reason for keeping the original MKV would be if you wanted the option to keep DTS and transcoded audio. Thorin
Tversity is a bit gimped now that they've brought out a paid version, and I could never get transcoding working properly for everything. I use PS3MediaServer now too http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/ It just works.
Scott
I never liked TVersity, and I have tried it numerous times. Is the paid version still free? They used to just trust you to pay for it if you liked it. I tried it, didn't like it, so went back to PS3MS. I honestly haven't found a single video file that it hasn't played yet. Agreed that PS3MS is great, but sadly with my QNAP I have no other option apart from tversity, not a big deal as it literately takes minutes with MKV2VOB to create a 1080p file that will happily stream across the homeplugs to the PS3

Wez
http://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/PS3_Media_Server Any good to you? I know some people have got it working but not sure on the transcoding performance on the ATOM cpu.
Scott
Surely it uses the same encoders/decoders as TVersity though? Would one still be faster than the other?

Scott
No need to worry about the Atom then PS3Mediaserver doesn't need refreshed, it automatically updates. That is one of my main gripes about TVersity. PS3MS is just better, without the bells and whistles user interface.

I would only switch to PS3MS so that I no longer had to convert my MKVs but since the ATOM isnt man enough for the job I am happy to stick with tversity. I know what you mean about refreshing the media library though, although tversity does support this, you can set a refresh interval timer or if you put -1 it refreshes live, I tried this and found it doesnt work on the QNAPs, just consumes 100% CPU which was a real PITA to disable again, I just click refresh when ever I add some media

It's just the container that is the problem afterall. I don't think it actually transcodes the file.
