RedM
My Dad has a problem with IE. I'm not sure which version (7 or 8 probably) as when I asked to find out he panicked and couldn't follow my simple instructions! When he clicks a link that opens a new window he cannot close the new window without the other window closing too. I only use IE at work and I couldn't replicate the fault. Any idea on how to stop it happening?
marbleapple
Multiple tabs? I.e. he has it set so the new window opens attached to the old one. Sorry, struggling to make the image bigger. If you look at the left screen it should show 2 tabs. I expect there is a way Ie does it automatically and it can be changed in settings. RedM
It isn't tabs. It's a new window that opens. Has it's own border and window controls (maximize etc.).
Abz
Red, any chance you talk him round to sending us a screen shot. When I read the post, the thought of tabbed windows came into mind. Do you know what Operating system he has? Then might be able to work out the version of IE he is running.

I have to explain what the address box is almost every time he needs help so getting him to take a screenshot would be pretty hard. He uses XP if that helps. nasoup
Easy one this. Uninstall Internet Explorer and then install Mozilla Firefox :d

Benzsupra
Go to Tools> Internet Options> Advanced tab and click reset. This may clear it up
caseys
Kill it with fire? Or possilby check : Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab In the Browsing section, uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts". caseys
Have you tried turning it off and on again? [nerd] I need to get that on a t-shirt sometime [/nerd] Alas doesn't work when some of your kit takes 30 minutes to reboot
RedM
Oh noes! I talked my dad through resetting IE and it worked a treat. It even asked if he wanted to upgrade to IE8. He selected yes and the pc spent ages downloading and installing. Even after that it seemed 'busy' and he told me this morning that it crashed several times last night. This morning it won't even reach the desktop. Not even in safe mode.He gets what seems like a message from Microsoft about the computer being unable to continue and he can select a bunch of option which all result in the pc rebooting at the point the desktop should appear. Any ideas before I drive to London and install Ubuntu on his machine?
caseys
Gave you got him to try and boot the machine with last good known config? It's one of the options after the relentless F8 mashing on startup

caseys
I also assume from his apparent level of computer savvyness that he has not frequently backed up the machine (I believe there was some functionality to do it in XP Pro / Vista Ultimate and Win 7 Premium)? As in put the CD in, boot and restore? Edit : If not then yes, I think physical assistance may be your easiest option if he doesn't want to bend over to take it to some local shop. RedM
He has no Windows cd nor can he find a recovery disk. I'm thinking of sending him an Ubuntu live cd and pen drive so that he can at least get into the drive and rescue pictures and important files. I'm also thinking that if I send him my OEM xp disc he should be able to reinstall windows using his pcs own serial code. He has the Windows reg sticker on the machine. Would I be correct in assuming this?
JustGav
If it is Windows XP, you will need to check the license sticker on the side to see which version it is. I recall there are 8 or 9 different versions of the CD. You can't install XP Home OEM CD using an XP Home Retail key *grrrrr* I can help you out with which ever version you need on an install media if you know which version it is you need. I expect that he has an OEM version as he wouldn't have bought a retail copy. He doesn't have the skillz to install it either. Or you could use your windows XP to run a detect and repair to replace the corrupt file(s). If his running Windows XP, I'd suggest he sticks to IE7. I didn't realise you could do that. I'm assuming that he'd just need to put the disc in, let it boot and then it'll give an option to repair? Re: IE7. I upgraded my partners pc with IE and SP3 and we had no issues. She's on a Linux box now though. Says a lot really.
RedM
UPDATE: As I couldn't fix his PC over the phone he went and got an old PC and set it up. It worked fine that evening but the following morning it wouldn't connect to the net. He has three missing or corrupt files. I'm trying to get him to write down what they are. I've sent him Firefox on a CD but that couldn't connect to the net either. Now then, what I'm thinking of doing is taking an Ubuntu live cd down. Using that to connect to the net, grabbing the missing files and placing them in the correct folders on his PC. Would this work? Is there a site which holds copies of Windows files? Is there anything else I'd need to do for this work?
