monsween
Good enough for what exactly? Narrow decent winter tyres and they'll be as good as any car is my guess. JUst generic, getting to work/shops etc with a bit of snow on the ground. Last year i found the supra un-drivable a couple of days and had to get the train to work lol. (Toyo's on the rear was the main reason)
dangerous brain
It'll be fine remember where they are designed for. I just stuck some hankook snow bears on my winter wheels yesterday and the grip levels despite losing 5 inch of rubber at the back is very impressive on the muddy leafy roads I'm driving on now. mistertwo
Get a V70 T5 - one of the ex traffic cop ones. You can pick them up for £1500, they've been well maintained and you can suspiciously pull out behind the bastard in the A3 that's been tailgaiting everyone and make him need a new pair of pants, thinking he's about to be pulled. Chris Wilson
But they are front wheel drive, and as such not a proper car at all
Chris Wilson
^ is that the one from the orange Opel Manta? Yes, the build thread that existed for that car was fascinating. Very talented guys.
bondango
Chris, you'll hate me... but I crushed a stunning 360GLT and a not to bad 262 bertone last year - both put through scrappage scheme
Chris Wilson
360GLT isn't one of my favourites at all, but the two door Bertone 200 series were nice, with squashy leather interiors and the vinyl roof.. Ever seen a 2 door 7 series, the Bertone 780? They are quite pretty things, in a brick like way . I also love 1800ES models. Lynx copied them when they made the Eventer, IMO. http://www.volvobertone.com/18enstory.html
bondango
Thought the 780 was nicer although never available in the UK. 240GLT's were quite plentiful over here at one stage, though im a fan of the 140's
Chris Wilson
I am liking that a lot, wouldn't take much to get me building something retro like that. I wonder what the chances of a totally rust free shell are? I think it would have to be a 2 door one though... Ohm hang on, I have 3 other unfinished jobs to do this witer.... And before you mention the V70R AWD those AWD systems are very well known for failing and cost thousands to fix!! By the time they got to this stage volvo's were getting just a tad too complicated. The old school ones can be hugely tinkered with and don't cost alot either. When I went round Zaandvoort track there was a guy there with a 960 sedan with a t61 turbo on it and that was pretty damn rapid.
Guest LoFET
I would say 740/940 Turbo Fun cars. i had 3 of them In sweden many build on volvos. Mainly 7/900 series with 850 turbo engines, the sound of these 5cyl engines when tuned is awesome. Like this one =) Or a mates 740 with 960 2,5L engine stroked to 2,8L GT37 turbo. dangerous brain
I was led to believe that volvo's red block engines were as easy and as cult an engine to work on as the 1/2JZ units in certain circles?
Chris Wilson
I used to do loads with the red block units and still have a proper Group A spec head, cam valves, remote wastegate TO4 turbo and special manifold, blah blah. made 360 BHP on pump fuel in my road car way back when. Great engines!
Wez
I was looking at some 850r motors yesterday as a possible daily motor
Chris Wilson
Torque steering things, Be sure t get an R though, the early cars were dreadful, traction wise. Bit of a *astard to work on, like most FWD cars. How's the turbo / manifold job coming along Wez?
Wez
How's the turbo / manifold job coming along Wez? Getting there slowly, I will post some updates soon
dangerous brain
I was looking at some 850r motors yesterday as a possible daily motor Best mate had a black manual one (like finding unicorn poo) but I was utterly un-impressed with it. Straight line it was quicker than my NA supe but in corners and from a standstill I ate it alive. My TT supe just destroyed it as did my 1JZ mk3. You had to have the stickiest tyres in the world to get any real grip out of it and like Chris said torque steery to the unpleasant. FWIW IMO the vaux omega 3.2 MV6 estate is a much better package. Miguel
Yes, the build thread that existed for that car was fascinating. Very talented guys. Beautifully executed build from what can I remember. I think I'll have a dig around for the thread and have another read.
