TopgunTT
Hi guys, Looking at upgrading the tv in the front room. Just wondered which would be the best out of LCD and PLASMA for gaming? Looking at around a 42 inch. Lets have your opinions. Cheers, Bill.
GazzaGSi
Plasma for gaming mate
JustGav
Really? I always thought the response time on LCD and fade out time would suit gaming better, whereas plasma is more suited to motion video. (Could be wrong though)
GazzaGSi
Input lag on certain plasma's is pretty much nothing mate Well, on my Panny 50VT20 and Panny P42G10 they are, and there is no blur on fast moving games weather it be footy, fps or racing games. My old LCD sony bravia used to leave shadows all over the place. The higher the Hz will help too, both of mine are 600hz.
GazzaGSi
Interesting read here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?topicid=55963&forumid=34&page_no=1 Whenever I pause a game to make a brew or go for a smoke I standby the TV to make sure I do not screen burn the TV. That is 1 thing that plasma's can suffer from although ive not experienced it.
JustGav
Hmmm, appears my thinking was wrong... mind you I do have a plasma anyway as I preferred the picture when I demo'ed a plasma vs lcd
AJI
I'm currently looking at buy a big screen and I've been doing a bit of research in to what's best. The latest plasmas seem to be the best buy for picture quality and its a case of LCDs trying to catch up. The main problem LCDs have is the ghosting when fast moving objects are shown across the screen. And also 'LCDs' and 'LED back lit LCDs' are not that good at showing deep black colours (unless they have a feature called 'local dimming'). For gaming, action movies or sports then plasma. For everything else LCD is good enough. Also to note...HD ready (or 720p) is enough for screen sizes 37" or below and more than enough for normal non-hd signal. Full HD (or 1080p) for any size above 37" and assuming you have the HD signal from sky or freeview.
GazzaGSi
Since I've had mine 2 cons of plasma's which most mention on website reviews etc are: a) not as thin as LCD/LED's - there is a bit of thickness to them. (doesnt matter to me as im not wall mounted, its on a stand in the corner of the living room) and; b) the power consumption is greater than LCD/LED's meaning your leci bill may increase slightly;) Cant say ive noticed though as my bill still seems a similar amount than what it was when I had my LCD... maybe I dont use it as much Gaz

Been trying to find it again online but it appears to be instore only. I must say the picture quality instore looked very good.

SteamAhead
After buying a Samsung 50" Plasma over a year ago, I now wish I went LCD/LED as it suffers from bad image retention in my games It seems worse with driving games where the speedo is static in the corner, guitar hero can be just as bad as well. And yes before anyone asks, I did follow all the precautions when setting up and running in the plasma. My last screen was a rear projector and I had nowhere near the same problems. As soon as I can afford it, I'm ditching the darn plasma and going LED. If you really do wish to go for Plasma I would stress that you don't buy cheap. Mine cost me £699 at the time which was the cheapest for that size, due to this I now suffer the price. Jim
GazzaGSi
Jim thats a shame, sorry to hear that. Fortunately my plasma's haven't suffered from that (5+ hour sessions on COD I would have expected the map in the top left corner to have been burned there but thank fully its not). Did you try and find any settings for your tv online that may help reduce your image retention?
edd_t
Plasma was a good move, especially panasonic. i have both plasma and lcd panasonics and the plasma is quite far the better when playing games (and most other things too). if you do ever get any slight burn it just keep the tv on and chose an input that has no signal so you get all the black/white dotty stuff, that clears it up quite quickly. Whitesupraboy2
Image retention is the main problem with Plasma's for gaming and i was worried! they are rated as 1. panasonic 2. LG 3. Samsung Sony im not sure of but i know the panasonic is the best. However the prices of panasonic are much higher. I went for a LG 50PK590 its about £630 at moment. Image retention is minor and only holds it for few seconds on a black screen every so often. TV has been perfect with built in freeview HD and network port so can watch movies from my PC with no xbox or media device running. Couldnt fault it, on Avforums the screen has been compared to the panasonic one and said to be just as good with only slight differences. Only point id say (doesnt cause me an issue) is the screen is very reflective...if you are gonna have direct light or brightness on to the screen it will turn into a mirror so stay away if thats the case. I did note though the TV has 51ms of picture lag apparently although it doesnt effect me and hard to even see it (not sure I even have)

Thorin
I've had my 50" Panasonic Plasma for ~18 month now, and it's been used extensively for gaming, can't say I've noticed any screen burn. Didn't think it was a problem with any recent plasma. Plasma is undoubtedly the better option still.

Did you try and find any settings for your tv online that may help reduce your image retention? Don't get me wrong, the picture is fantastic with HD on xbox, sky, bluray... but a real pain with the retention. Not as much of a problem if I turn the brightness and contrast right down but then I might as well turn the tv off as then I can't see anything The TV does have a burn-in setting for which I've used. I've also tried many things from AVforums guide's... but still no use. I think it is just a case of cheap plasma TV = cheap components used. Lbm
A friend of mine who deals in Panasonic stuff was saying a year or so ago that if you were going 42" or bigger, go plasma - and anything under, go LCD. I can't remember exactly why, but it was one of those rule of thumb things. Could be complete cobblers though
Thorin
I can't remember exactly why, but it was one of those rule of thumb things. That's just because they didn't do plasma panels smaller than 40/42". I think there's some 37" panels now though.
TopgunTT
I am looking for something that might be better for gaming, I am sure they are both good for watching normal tv. And yes the burning is a bit of a concern if i go plasma. Such a decision

Such a decision Burning isnt really an issue anymore and when it was it was only when the set was new, there use to be a run in period for plasma screens where you had low contrast and no static images. Not so sure you have to do the same with newer sets.
martini
I have a 42" plasma, which I love. Recommended. Might well be selling it soon too
