The mkiv Supra Owners Club

not my week

My runabout is a 94 cavalier and was only running on 3 cylinders when i left work this morning. Optomistically i got the tools out thinking maybe a bad lead or even the coil pack. I was met with a bulging radiator pipe, massive pressure in the cooling system.

Heres hoping it just a head gasket and not the head

The lesson here is when you do a rebuild use an OE gasket, not save a fiver and use the factors.... doh

94 Cavalier?

Was the gasket not worth more than the car Kris...:p You could write one off, filling it up with fuel..!!

H.

In the desperate hope of a little sympathy for my cause I turned to the good people of the supra forum and all you can do is mock me. Shame on you.

But i can't really argue with any of it.... :D

Well played Kris..:D I used to have the MkII Cavaliers when I was 18 and 19. I loved my white LX and thought I was the shizz....:innocent:

I feel your pain Kris lol.

Thank you Hodge. Your supportive comment has come to surcease the flow of tears. Knowing that someone feels as I do is strangely comforting.

Do you have a cavalier and need a friend too? :D

The blown gasket is a turning point for me to grow up so it will be sold when i fix it next week. I was looking for something else until a few weeks ago, nearly bought an mpv. Thats just admitting defeat and giving up

Bring on the diesel mondeo family wagon..... i can't wait

Nice.

Was looking at the very same model. Quite fancy it in grey though. How you finding it?

It's in my driveway Kris, very easy to find :p

First impressions are very good. The seats are incredibly comfortable. I knocked it off by actually getting all the options too, sat-nav, bluetooth, voice control etc etc etc. It's got more toys than hamleys.

I averaged 54mpg on the way home so that can only be a good thing. Insurance was £128 more than the 106gti I have so that's not an issue for me either.

Overall one happy camper.

Oh yeah, there was a grey one I was interested in. Got in contact with the guy but he bumped it and it now needs the bumper repaired. Just in case you come across the same one and it isn't mentioned. Think it was advertised at around 7.5k, guy is from Glasgow.

I know why my old man liked this club. You are all as sarcy as he was :p

Thanks for the heads up on the grey one. I'm looking for leather, comfort and 50mpg so it ticks all the boxes. And i have 3 kids to fit in the back aswell so it should do just fine. Must say i am tempted by the petrol version. Can pick them up for half the price, half the mpg though

More than double the tax too (£400 per year, £155 for the TDCi) and a good chance they have had a harder life. Send me a PM when you are getting ready to go for viewings and I'll give you some pointers on what to look out for if you like. I'm no expert but I'm quite thorough when it comes to finding out what I am buying.

As for the kids, I couldn't get over the space in the back considering the boot. You could easily get 3 bodies in that boot. I'm 6'4 and I was in the back, comfortably, no bother. The recaro's in the front are a dream.

Thanks Scott, i'll keep that in mind. I do tend to look into things aswell but anything you can add will be very useful. The only common problem with them seems to be the dual mass flywheel can fail. I read it can be fixed by fitting a normal fly and clutch from a transit if it does though ;)

The back seat that big? It needs to take 2 boosters and a baby seat. Mondeo was one af a few cars I considered that looked to have quite a flat rear seat rather than sculpted and ackward

I was VERY impressed with the rear seat space, obviously you would need to try it out for your own requirements but I was honestly surprised that I got in behind the drivers seat when it was in my driving position lol.

Dual mass flywheel isn't as much of an issue if the car hasn't been ragged. The more common problem is the injectors and the EGR valve. The EGR valve is an easy fix as you can clean it... as long as it isn't too far gone. The injectors is a fair bit more expensive at around £800 for the injectors, fitted and a re-code. One thing I will say about the flywheel though, if you were unlucky enough for things to go wrong with it... do not.. whatever you do... fit a solid flywheel. This is a botch repair and it will only dramatically decrease the life of the gearbox. The dual mass flywheel takes away a lot of the shock etc saving the gearbox from taking the brunt of it. If you replace it with a solid flywheel this dampening is no longer there and the box will take the brunt of it.

Sound. From what your saying your a tall un then. I'm 6'4 so the smallest child always ends up squashed behind me lol

Thanks for the heads up on the fly. I had read it a couple of places but wasn't taking it as gospel. Like you said if its a looked after car then its unlikely to have had too much abuse.

It's just one of those things bud. All cars have weak points, it's not a fault as such.. it's just wear and tear.

Yeah I'm 6'4 bud. I met you at knockhill. I was the tall one to your left ;)

Well. The seat was in my driving position and I got in behind it. By my driving position I mean allllllll the way back lol.

Sorry mate, i'm bad at remembering names first time round. I know the face now :)

You must be working the night to be up at this time

I'm shocking with names and faces, I only remember you through the unfortunate circumstances of our meeting :)

I'm up for the UFC bud. I tend to be a bit of a nighthawk at the best of times. Fortunately I'm backshift on Monday so it shouldn't mess me up too much. Earlyshift Mondays after UFC Saturday/Sundays is a nightmare. You on shifts or just a nighthawk too?

On shift mate and is a full moon. Used to be a really good job I had, 7 on/off nights, tech support for BT corporate. all change in past few months though. Have to take calls from real people :( All the saving money strategy got us lumberd with 500% more work. Have something else in the pipeline though so hopefully be outa here before xmas

Do you practice martial art yourself to be interested in UFC or just like a good scrap? :eyebrows: I enjoy watching it, don't think i would stay up till 3am though, do plenty of that already

Not at all bud. Been in many a scrap due to everyone wanting to fight the 'big guy' but never trained in anything. Just enjoy the rawness of the UFC. It's a 6am finish normally. I always have a bottle of buckfast during the fight, full of caffeine so makes sure I'm up early enough in the morning...... old firm match :D

Times are hard everywhere at the moment, it's a bit shit really. Don't know whether you are coming or going..... literally :( Good luck with the new opportunity :)
