Suprash
Well, after finally getting a running Supra, and the prospect of not having to pull the engine in and out no more, swapping blocks, getting TT pistons dropped, re-mapping etc, it seems I have been missing the fiasco....... So last weekend, I decided to do this

Suprash
This is my learner car/the misses learner car lol. She wants to start, so I thought this old thing has been stood around long enough. Last time this car got taken out the bottom end started knocking, and the last time she was parked, whilst revving, the revs would climb then hold/get stuck at 2.5rpm, as you kept pressing the excelerator the rev needle would finally release and the revs would shoot up, so it was obvious something was gripping on the bottom end. As the misses wants to learn more about cars, she was there to help and learn, although after that one day of pulling the engine out, when it finally came down to the exciting part, she gave up, so Im now out there on my own lol. I wish i had a garage and a cheap car to tinker with.... I am crap when it comes to mechanics..!! H.
Suprash
So after getting the block out and her loosing interest in the first day, I stripped down the bottom end, never actually done this before, so its a good learning curve. Got the shells and crank out and this is what I found.....
Suprash
Sorry, I couldn't tell from the pic....fail..!! I thought you were doing a conversion on the Supe with it being in the background.... I wish i had a garage and a cheap car to tinker with.... I am crap when it comes to mechanics..!! H. Me too mate, a year ago, I hadnt done much more then drop a diff out, or change a head gasket, but even then, always with supervision as I didnt trust myself, because well Im not a mechanic and I dont know lol. But you learn, plus I have a good mate, who's done this countless times, especially with CA's, so Im usually always on the phone to him lol. If you wanted to pick it up, learn, come down mate, there's always tea and bacon sarnies at mine lol
Suprash
So the shells pictured are from no.1, if you look at the 3rd pic, you can see that shell looks to wide ?, so consequently, its been squashed out the sides and it was obviously that was gripping the crank. But its like that shell isnt for this car, or someone's got it mixed up, getting 1, 2 & 3 right and then.....well, god know, but you can see its too wide. All the other shells look good, but I've decided to replace the mains, big ends (?) and replace the front and rear crank oil seal, this way I know the bottom should be good after so hoepfully no more problems and we can get her skidding.......finally. TLicense
Definite oil starvation. When there's no oil in there, the crank will smash the bearing flat and squash it out. You'll need to carefully check out the crank to make sure there's no scoring on the pin, and if the car has done a lot of miles, that the pin is still round. (Although it's usually the big end pins that suffer from wear more, so you might well be OK on the main) You should be able to get the crank reground if there's any issues. Swampy442
Yup thats biffed! Know its a learning experience etc but wouldnt it be cheaper and easier to get a known good short block?
Nodalmighty
Hmmmmm! the ubiquitous bearing hammer. I would imagine the rod bearing tunnel in egg shaped too. Had the bearing not spun?
Suprash
So oil starvation you say, hmmmm, wonder why ? There was oil in there and it wasnt knocking at first but I suppose that doesn't mean to say there wasn't already a problem though does it. Craig, yeah it would probably be easier mate and cheaper to but another block, but I would still have the ball-ache of pulling it all out to swap over, and this way I get to learn some shit instead of always relying on someone else, which I have done for the last 8 years of supra ownership. Where as now I'm going to tackle my fucked no.5 myself on my grey supe And the bearing hadn't spun no. Also the crank looks good, I can't see any scoring or marks, but then the car probably only done about 100 yards or so when it started knocking, granted it was flat out going round a cone lol
Swampy442
Sweet work, and an ideal engine to learn on
Suprash
Right, so as this has been sat in the back ground over the winter months as I have been waiting for my mate who builds CA's time and time again to come round and take me through what he knows, the other night I finally got him round to tackle this more. Sooner the better I thought as the local stray now seems to have made the 13 his home. He's found the hole in the transmission tunnel, he'll be fucked when there's a gearbox back in the car So anyway, he took me through re-building the bottom end, what to look out for, things to do etc, its all pretty easy shit really. Its amazing really, when you dont know, or understand engines they can be a scary thing, but you do it, you think "shit that was easy", a bit like sex I suppose, maybe that applies to a lot of things in life really Anyway enough of the phylosophy lesson, onward with the good shit Stripping down.......CA sexy times... Head off..... Bottom end ready..... I just wanna show off my plush surroundings again Bottom end all back together.....head time... Head on... Jobs a good'un.... So it was discovered that the CA has brand new pistons in it, although we cant work out of they are good or cheap pistons, but they are brand new non the less. Next is to get the gearbox back on and then I can start putting it all back into the car, which probably wont happen until Wed next week at least. I need to get the head and crank/cam seals on the Supra done first. But once its all back in, run her up time, which Im really looking forward to after pretty much doing this all myself now, its a good test car for doing the serious work on the Supra's. Suprash
Cool, looks interesting, wish I had a way to learn, being a girl no one would take me seriously about wanting to learn about engines lol Come round, you can learn with the Mrs That looks quite tidy for a training car Ash, shouldn't there be big dents and bits hanging off? Believe it or not mate this car hasnt actually been skidded properly yet. I bought this car as my first learning car but due to engine problems it sat outside my house for 2 years whilst I was using the S14 and then the 180sx. We got it running a little while ago and I took it to Pod so the Mrs could start to learn drifting, but the diff that was supposed to be welded turned out to be open and after an hour or two of abuse the bottom end started knocking, so hence pulling it all out and rebuliding the bottom end. We had to also replace one of the rods. But going forward this will be my missle car, I want to start trying to step up to the 90/100mph entries, something which Im always going to be quite conservative in terms of progressing to when in the Supra, too much time and money invested to bin it, but obviously officially, its her learner skid car
Kilps
If you get bored when you've sorted that one, let me know. I can supply a car to be tinkered with ...when you dont know, or understand engines they can be a scary thing... I'm at that stage! Edit: I'd 'help' (not sure how much help I'd be!) of course, I want to learn

Suprash
Just thought I finish this thread off and put it to rest. Well this car never got skidded, it kept kiling crank angle sensors and depsite replace everything around that area, 4 crank angle sensors, cover plate, cam wheel and cam shaft we couldnt figure out why it keeps happening. I've pretty much gone too far with this car and at one point I thought I had it solved after replacing the cam shaft and cam wheel, it drove fine for over 500 miles before killing another crank angle sensor. In total I must have covered near on 2,000 miles in total, so I guess there was a bit of enjoyment of driving her about for a while but thats it, no more. So it will be broken, stripped for spares and bits and whats left weighed in. RIP Dark Destroyer, you lived up to your name quite literally I replaced the doors with my old 180sx doors from my previous comp car and some old skirts that I had knocking around http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/262901_10150259903498481_633813480_7484417_2347309_n.jpg Unfortunately we spent far too much doing this http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/283967_10150257774173481_633813480_7463977_1718654_n.jpg And even the Mrs was learning how to time a CA http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/284850_10150266333928481_633813480_7543373_5276454_n.jpg
