Digsy
Following on from this thread... Can anyone recommend me a PC CD/DVD rewriter (internal 5.25" full height format) that has a lifespan more than the average fruit fly? My last one was a Lighscribe jobby which sounded great but I almost immediately never used because felt pens are so much more convenient. A black front would be nice but not necessary. And also not one so new fangled that I will need to upgrade Nero to be able to use it. I also do not need Blu-ray, just DVD / CD +/- R/RW Reliability = essential. I know these things are ten a penny these days, but I've had such bad luck with CD ROM drives that I am hoping someone in the IT business might be able to recommend one. Digsy
For info: Its a Sony Optiarc in there at the moment. Ordered on 11 Feb 2009. Conked out October 2010 almost exactly 18 months later.

The-Plethora
I think both of mine are Sony ones, I have 2 writers in my main PC, seem to work fine and they cost about £15 each and came with black and old school beige bezels. Think I got them from overclockers. Only ones I would steer clear of are Lite on drives. Presumably you are after a SATA drive?
DamanC
We use the latest Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Combo drives in our builds. 500+ and yet to have one fail
caseys
A what drive? As Daman said above, Sony are the brand to have if you want reliability. I've never known one to fail.
Digsy
...Sony are the brand to have if you want reliability. I've never known one to fail. Apart from the one I bought in Feb 2009 Presumably you are after a SATA drive? I should have mentioned this in the first post. My PC is pretty old-skool so I need a PATA / IDE drive - which I see from DABs current range cuta down my options a fair bit!
caseys
Apart from the one I bought in Feb 2009 Really? Hmm... take it back? Nothing at the end of the day is truly infallible when it involves any form of movement. Edit : I will refer you to this post. It does refer to a PS3 but does cover any consumer electronics. http://mkivsupra.net/vbb/showpost.php?p=2456668&postcount=9 Unless of course it's too much hassle, as jeez... I bet a DVD writer drive now retails for probably 87p
JustGav
If need be, I've got a couple old ones spare that still function, welcome to one
Matt H
Surely they are that cheap nowadays it doesn't really matter. My secondary panasonic drive has always worked well.
Digsy
Yeah, as I said in my first post I know these are ten a penny so I feel a bit of a dork even asking. Money isn't really the issue (but thanks for the offer of a freebie Gav). Its just that I've replaced so many of these sodding things I was trying to get a consensus of a reliable manufacturer. I need one right away because I want to read up on some Supra service stuff and that's all on CD. I'll see if I can lay my hands on an LG or Panasonic locally. Failing that I'll just get a no-name one for tuppence ha'penny and assume that'll be in the bin in a year or soo, too
