Copying vinyl logos from photos??

Recommended Posts

I am restoring an ex Heinz-Harald Frentzen Lola back to its original period Camel sponsored colour scheme and will soon need to address the logos on the car. Has anyone experience of copying logos from photos with a good degree of accuracy as to size and colour? What's involved, both technically and financially? Photos of the car in period scheme and some of a friends Lotus F1 with similar logos from the same period at http://www.chriswilson.tv/frentzen/frentzen.html

Thanks.

this might be some use? http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/search/logo/camel

think you have to pay for the vector images but once you have them i would imagine they are easily edited to the correct colour etc.

Any decent vinyl company will have their own graphic designer who can reproduce graphics from web images or photos. A graphic designer would easily be able to prepare what you need, you'd just need to give them dimensions to work to.

Nic is right, I am a designer and if you have the measurements and a ref of the colour it should be pretty easy to to. My company doesn't do cars but we do buses etc, I am on way home from the pub at the mo' so not in full working order but pm me any questions and I'll try and help as best I can in the morning, but if you can get vector versions of the logos you want it will probably save some artworking fees. As jpegs and tiffs will look rubbish when enlarged and a vector format such as a ai or some eps formats can be enlarged and change colour much easier.. If you have a vector copy of logos. A colour ref and sizes it should be a straight forward job for anyone with any idea. Any questions just drop me a pm

I have downloaded Ghostscript and GS View, plus some Camel logos in vector format, which I can now open and see. Thanks for the info. I would need them cropping to remove the text or whatever, and the colour changing. I can probably get a sample of the correct colour, but a friend restoring an F1 Lotus has had to pay a fortune for some vinyl to be specially done in the exact right colour for some logos. I am not that fussed so long as it's close enough to look right :) I assume changing the colour of the EPS file itself isn't needed, the actual vinyl used is the sole arbiter of the end colour? I just need to get the scaling right and remove superfluous stuff? The original vinyls are all solid colour thank God.

The vinyl company won't need the artwork in the correct colour, to produce the vinyls they will use either black and white or outlined artwork, scaled to the right size. If you give them the logo graphic files, dimensions you want each graphic to be, the colours spec and the photos of the car, they should be able to sort out the rest.

Chris if they don't have the right vinyl colours, ask if they have a Pantone book (an industry standard colour swatch book used by designers and printers). If you give the Pantone reference number to the vinyl company they will then be able to match the colour exactly.

I use that site almost every day.

Its free to. You just need to sign up.

Yes, was a bit wary about all the questions but it went smoothly afterwards though. Must be a coincidence I suddenly have 370 Eastern Europeans wanting to marry me and have dozens of other new friends wanting to send me Viagra bargains, ready for the big night.....

Joking, seems fine so far ;)
