Wheel bearing?

Hi chaps,

on my station car (98 1.8 passat) i've noticed that there is a rumble (more so when turning left) throughout the car. It's always been there (had the car 6 months and done 2k in it) and i've always not been that fussed about it.

Last weekend i went to the cotswalds and decided to take the passat and 4 peeps and luggage.. After 350 miles i can say that the sound has got slightly worse, but i've also noticed that the passenger front tyre has worn slightly the outside edge? Can't see any movement in the wheel though.

Would this be the wheel bearing, or could it simply be bad tyre alignment? or both...

Never had a wheel bearing go.

Many thanks.

Craig.

unlikely that your front wheel bearing going will make your front tyre wear uneven, not unless its totally knackered and hanging off.

I think they are press fit into the hub on the front of yours, i would advice to get it changed now though as winter is on its way and you don't want to be standing in the rain when it lets you down.

Tracking sounds like its towing in too much....do check your tyre pressures too just in case.

Is the steering wheel straight when driving in a straight line on a flat road?

Just a tip sometimes noise can travel through a driveshaft giving the appearance that the other side is noisy...check both for noise and not necessarily play, you can use a mechanics stethoscope to check this if its not really obvious.

Or is it your c.v joint clonking? rubble is normally a wheel bearing though.
