CJ
I recently decided to go completely legal out here and buy a Greek registered car. Now, the cost of second hand cars out here is exorbitant with 20 year old battered cars fetching 700 euro or more but I managed to find a 1995 Opel Corsa for 800 euro and was well happy - to begin with! After agreeing a deal, I needed to ensure all was OK and so I took it to get an IKTEO cert (like our MOT) which it passed but at a cost of 67.00. So, all in all, I reckon 867.00 is not too bad and so we (the seller and I) arrange to go to get the paperwork changed to my name. And now the fun begins. I am told that I need to go to a bank first to pay the transfer fee. So, off we toddle but the bank then sends us to the transport office to find out the appropriate fee. A policeman at the office tells us that we need to go to the local tax office and not the transport office. We go to the tax office only to be told we need to go to the transport office - but in a different building. We get there and they tell us we have to go back to the bank and pay the fee (more about the cost later) and then come back to the transport office. We go to the bank, I pay the fee and then take the slip of paper back to the transport office and they then issue me a new ownership book within 10 minutes. And now for the best part. In order to transfer the paperwork into my name it just cost me 135.00 euro!!! Yes, something that we do for the cost of a stamp in teh UK (as in sending back a slip of paper to the DVLA) costs 135.00 and for something that took 10 minutes to do. Rip off Britain? I don't thinks so sometimes!!

CJ
Bureaucracy at it's finest in Greece. Indeed. Even the Greek fella who sold me the car was bemused by it all. Mind you, we had a good laugh trying to guess how many times they were going to stamp particular bits of paper. That's a thought - maybe I should start a rubber stamp business out here? Mmmmm:confused:
AndrewOW
You could make a killing selling rubber stamps there and in China. My goodness, they love their little rubber stamps in China!

CJ
You could make more of a killing importing 2nd hand cars into Kos mate!! I'm seriously considering it for Cyprus! That would only work if the cars are Greek registered my friend. Otherwise they become illegal after 6 months unless you then put Greek plates on - and the cost of that is horrendous. Supralad
Thats Greece for you. I used to live in Voula near Athens when i was younger and this does not surprise me at all. Greece is a very poor country and would jump at the chance to get extra costs added onto a simple task.
CJ
bloody boy lovers That's probably the first post I have ever seen where you managed to get all the spelling correct and it happens to be racist!

Can the mods please delete this before the Greek government see it as I am sure they would make that a new rule within weeks

As it happens H, today is very wet and windy - but that will probably change by the weekend. I am back in December this year and desperately trying to sort out transport for my visit. If I get something I am certainly going to try and meet up with old mates
CJ
Just to prove it isn't all bad news out here: I rang the insurance place tonight and told them I needed to get cover for me and my son and they asked me why I needed to get it for him to as they know he is leaving Kos in December. I said that i thought it was prudent to do so in case he has an accident within the next couple of months and their reply was, "if he has an accident we will put him on the policy then". Got to love that eh?
CJ
Just to add that I only had to tell them about Josh as he is under 21. If he was older then there is no need to declare any driver as out here the car is insured, not the person. So anyone with a full license can legally drive it.
