Samsung Galaxy s or HTC Desire

Has anyone got either of these phones? I'm currently using a Nokia N97 but am looking at changing it. I was disappointed in the Nokia, apps never worked properly and the phone hangs alot. I've heard great reviews on both of these phones and just wondered if people here have first hand experience with them.

A couple of friends have these (one each) and they both love them. It's down to preference. I like HTC Sense on the Desire, but I like the aesthetics on the Galaxy. It's quite iPhone 4-esque.

You won't be disappointed with either, so go to the phone shop and demo them :)

I will be paying a visit to my local phone shop to take a closer look for sure but wanted first hand experience from people who have had and used them for a while.

I use my camera all the time on my phones but when you think about it how many photos do you take on your phone that actually requires the flash? The only thing i use my flash for is as a torch. The lack of one on the Galaxy S wont stop me going that route.

One thing i hate about my N97 is how slow it can be opening apps. Even opening a new text message can take what feels like forever so the comment about the desire feeling slower than the Galaxy is swaying my decision already.

I didn't realise there is a Desire HD. Is that completely different to the normal Desire?

Galaxy S is amazing. I love the HD video capture. One you realise that you need TaskKiller as a widget, all is well. All hail Android 2.2

Camera is great but DOES NOT have a flash. It could be an issue. Day time piccies are awesome though. AMOLED screen makes watching HD movies - yes, 720p movies - ultra cool.

The HTC Desire HD and Iphone 4 both have HD video capture too i think. I've seen a few comments about taskkiller. I take it that it reorganizes the ram or something to speed it up?

HTC Desire Z would be my choice. My Wife just ordered one, cracking phone. All the positives of the Desire with the added bonus of a keyboard.

I'm running the HTC Desire with a modded firmware that allows 720p video capture and playback. I have also messed around with HD firmware on it as well. It's a FANTASTIC multipurpose device. Beats the Galaxy S hands down in my opinion.

Anyone that feels the desire is slow needs to get rid of the bloatware.

Regarding task killer apps, there is a lot of misinformation about this, but people don't understand how memory management works on Linux.

You don't need them, full stop. In fact some of them are known to actually increase battery consumption rather than the other way around.

Galaxy S is undoubtedly a better spec'd phone, but Samsung have an appalling record of not updating their phones beyond what the phone ships with. Sure 2.2 is nice now... but what about when 3.0 comes out? (thus speaks the bitter original Galaxy owner stuck with 1.5)

HTC Desire HD out end of the month might be the one to go for.

Can I just ask, haz anyone gone from an iPhone to either of these phones and if so how do they compare?

My contract is up for renewal just now and I'm currently in 3 minds as what to do. Adaptability is my main concern, as I'd be lost without my 3GS. I don't particularly use it for anything specific, mainly just browsing and emails.

I'm not fussed on the keyboard. My N97 has that and i rarely use it.

The Desire HD is the one to go for then. I like the idea of the keyboard. I am the same in that I would hardly use it but it is a very nice option.

Have a look at the video's etc, the phone is only 1mm thicker, or something daft like that, because of the keyboard.

No use to you bud. Too much faffing around to get it suited perfectly to your tastes/needs etc. Once setup to the individual absolutely nothing touches the OS, there is a few hours of setting up/learning involved though.

Seriously they both suck. I have the samsung it sucks the battery out in half a day using it normal. And HTC gets slow if you use it alot, and you WILL through it out of a window.

Just "root" them and install a nice Task Manager to kill the tasks. Job done. Did the same on my Hero and it was great.

Also, install a debranded firmware with as few as possible addons and watch them fly.

My desire has never slowed down once. I had it on for 2 weeks without a reboot and I never had an issue. Are you definitely talking about the Desire?

I've never had issues with Desire slowing down either... strange that a couple of people have said this though. I find it incredibly fast, it's never once frozen or been sluggish.... my old G1 on the other hand seemed to have a mind of its own sometimes.

Had the opportunity to have a proper play on the Galaxy S yesterday, and I found that I couldn't get on with it. There was nothing wrong with the phone at all, but I really like the inclusion of the Sense UI on the Desire (I missed the pinch to switch screens) and it makes it much more useable in my opinion. Whereas my friend thinks the opposite and prefers the Galaxy S over the Desire which just goes to show it's down to personal preference.

They are both worth a look, so just go and test drive some :)
