tbourner
Some of you may know we volunteer for Huskies in Need rescue, we did volunteer for Malamute Rescue and Husky Welfare but because they only deal with KC registered pure bred dogs we decided to put all of our time into Huskies in Need instead, as they cater for all Husky cross breeds and even non-huskies. http://huskiesinneed.webs.com/ They're a relatively new charity, not many volunteers, but LOTS of dogs. This week for example: We have Jed with us, we've just had him vaccinated (£50) and he's going up to Scotland to be adopted this weekend (we're driving to Telford and meeting the founder who's driving the rest!!), we've also got Kya coming down to another fosterer in Portsmouth, and Kita going up to a fosterer in East Kilbride. HiN have to pay 25p per mile for transport help. Freya is currently in Gosport but the fosterers are not looking after her, she slipped her collar and got hit by a car meaning the tip of her tail being removed and a bruised leg, they're not keeping her cone or muzzle on and they have 4 other dogs who they won't separate, so her tail keeps getting worse. So far Freya's vet bill is £1200. HiN as of yesterday have £328 in the bank! We're removing her today and taking her to a fosterer in Portsmouth (the same one who's having Kya), then she'll be moved up to Scotland with Jed at the weekend for proper treatment. The other dog in Gosport is Kira, who along with Kya is being speyed on Monday at our vets, then we need to arrange moving Kira out so we can remove those fosterers from the books. We're lucky we can use Friends of the Animals charity for speying so it's only £60 a time (cheap for such large dogs), still; another £120 from my bank that I'm going to need to claim back at some point. HELP Basically, we're begging for support. If you can donate anything there's a link on their website: http://huskiesinneed.webs.com/donateandgetinvolved.htm or PayPal [email protected] Any amount small or large would be great, also if you have any doggy items such as bowls, bedding etc. that you don't need we would always make use of it. Or if anyone can help with fostering dogs that would be awesome!! You get food and vets bills paid for you just have to keep the dog until it gets adopted basically. We also need help with transport but these dogs won't fit in a Supra , anyone with dog friendly vehicles who fancies moving dogs around can you let me know what areas you can help with and I'll tell the wife (HiN admin). Any suggestions on fundraisers would also be welcome, if you have experience of organising such things we'd appreciate input, Yvonne is our fundraiser so all ideas will be passed on to her. Here's the girl we adopted, she was Mimi but we renamed her Kaiya (yep, another 'K' name), you can see our Malamute boy Loki in the background. And the 2 of them lazing: We love what we do but it's so stressful and heartbraking sometimes, with Malamutes it's not so bad as they're not very well known, but SOOOOO many people pick up Huskies thinking they're like normal dogs, and then realise they grow quick and need lots of leadership that they just get rid of them. Pixelfill
trev, I would love to foster, but I've no experience, work all day and have cats. Apart from these small niggles I think I'd be perfect respect to you for doing what you do though. Mike

Experience is a bigger issue though, you really need to know your stuff with these guys, they can be little bastards if you don't have the knowledge to control them! Chris Wilson
Would love to help but eleven dogs is it for us, plus the rest of the critters. Good luck with it all though, a very worthy cause, and as you say, no doubt very stressful at times unless you try and remain very detached, which is very hard. Experience is a bigger issue though, you really need to know your stuff with these guys, they can be little bastards if you don't have the knowledge to control them! I didn't think huskies liked being left on their own all day because they tend to normally be in large groups. Do yours not wreck the house when you are not in? And how does the cat react to them? Just curious because I would really like one of these dogs (would love a wolf but really not practical!) but thought that because I worked all day and have 2 cats it wouldn't work out. Just curious because I would really like one of these dogs (would love a wolf but really not practical!) but thought that because I worked all day and have 2 cats it wouldn't work out. They don't like being left true, either me or the wife come home at lunchtime every day so they're only left for 4 hours max. We also walk them a minimum 1 hr a day, in winter we work them on a scooter pulling us through the woods as they can't be let off lead to run. This obviously tires them enough that they come home and go to sleep! They get training (usually) once a day too, even just 5 mins of 'sit' 'wait' 'come' style training knackers them more than any walking can. The cat lives upstairs, we have a complex arrangement of gates that we open and close for him to go out! And they're confined in an area at night so the cat can wander past. Generally cats are OK with them if the dog's introduced as a puppy, however our cat is a wuss and just ran whenever he saw Loki, and running from a dog isn't the best idea! TBH those are minor issues, as well as the fact they dig a lot, can clear 6ft fences and can't be let off lead. The big one is the dominance though, you can't give them an inch. If that cute 10 week puppy puts his paws up on your leg and yelps all cute like, he's testing your dominance and you have to push him off and say no, they're bloody clever and if you let them get away with something just once they'll test you on that thing FOREVER. tbourner
We've had about £130 donated to the Freya vet bills fund from another dog forum. Anyone else if you can donate anything at all to Paypal [email protected] that would be brilliant.

tbourner
Heheh no not us we're in Havant, don't know any breeders in Gosport TBH. If you want to send me your phone number I can get Zoe to ring you or your wife and sort out what you want to do and help with. Thanks very much for offering either way, we've been doing a lot of transport around the area as we have 2 fosterers who neither of them have vehicles!! Geoff Valenti off this forum had a couple of Weimaranas when I went up to see him YEARS ago, they're mental excitable dogs with loads of energy aren't they? Sounds fun! I'll get Zoe to give you a ring Saturday, any time?

Kev_A
I've ALWAYS wanted a huskie. I almost picked one up a couple of months back from a breeder who moves around alot with work. He was living in Orkney at the time! Ultimately though I had a reality check and decided that with a baby on the way and living in a 2 bedroom apartment it wouldn't be fair to the dog. I've always had dogs around me growing up though starting with a Corgi, then a border collie/black lab cross, then a cocker spaniel and black lab retreiver ( both bred as gun dogs) which my parents currently have, we're breeding the Spaniel next year and I've been promised one of those pups. I plan to move out into a house next year so I shall subscribe to this thread and check back at that time as I'd be happy to lend a hand Perhaps fostering one of these dogs first would be a good entry into ownership of one
tbourner
Perhaps fostering one of these dogs first would be a good entry into ownership of one It's not easy as you don't have any choice over the dog, you could get one with loads of issues, but yes it's a free dog for a short time basically, if you fall in love you can always adopt them as well. barneybrendan
take my hat off to you.been thinking of getting involved with the beagle rescue as i have a fair bit of time on my hands lately.Theres too many people breeding expensive dogs with know regards to whho buys them and no after care advice ect.when we got our beagles i had to sign a contract that if i had to let them go that the breeder had to have them back, something i feel every breeder should be doing. tbourner
Update! We REALLY need fosterers to look after dogs as we can't afford to keep putting them in kennels, and it's not good for them anyway as they don't get looked after properly and we don't get to assess them. So if anyone knows anything about dogs and preferably Huskies would you be able to foster a dog for us? You just look after the dog like your own and we pay for food and vets bills and any transport you've done. It's not easy but it's essentially saving lives, as dogs that we don't have space for often go to centres with destruction policies. You can fill in the form on site if you don't want to reply on here.
SupraDan24
How long does a typical fostering last? Just a ball park figure. Also, what are they like with other breeds, particualy smaller females?
tbourner
Usually a few weeks, completely depends on the dog though, we had a boy with us who went within a week, and another fosterer has had a girl for 5 months!!! Other breeds also depends on the dog, it's like going to a pound and taking home the first dog you see - it might get on with your dog it might not. It will almost certainly need some training which is why I say a bit of dog behaviour knowledge is pretty important, knowing how to socialise a dog and what discipline to give and when etc. We really need people to help but I won't pretend it's easy. SupraDan24
I've linked my mum to the thread. I'll see if she's interested, she's experienced with Dogs. Not promising anything though, as she's breeding her cat's right now.
Nic
Trev, just been listening to Chris Moyles on Radio 1, they were talking about Siberian Huskies as a Mastermind quiz subject this week, only caught the last bit of it so not really sure what it was all about. Thought it could be an opportunity to call in and see if you could get some publicity for your charity.

Haven't heard it but I've been thinking about our founder ringing into TV and radio phone-ins, cos they always ask your name and what you do so we could at least get the rescue name on show even if we don't get to chat about it.
