drift_bear
my mate has taken his mr2 n/a import (1993) to the local garage to get an MOT, he has been told it has failed the MOT due to not having a CAT in. am i wrong in thinking that cars before 1995 dont need a CAT for the emmisions test? being an import, should the engine codes match up to the database that the garage has or has it had a uk engine fitted? any help grealy needed. comorin219
If your car was registered after 1st August 1992 you must have the Cat present and working for the MoT. Previously registered cars can have the Cat permanently removed.

Previously registered cars can have the Cat permanently removed. Not the case where I took mine last week, he said that any pre '95 didn't come into the legislation. I was under the impression that if it isn't on the system they can't do a cat test.
Vicky
I never had any issues with mine and it was a 94 reg.
comorin219
Just a strange way the law works, it states if made after Aug 92 it would come with a cat so would require a cat when re testing, however it also states if your car passes an emission test without cat The mot tester cannot fail it for not having a cat because the law is about emissions & not whether it has a cat or not
dude
It will be on the system and will need a cat, even when I was a tester we could not test my silver sup because we could find it on the system so i took it round the corner where they didn't care. Martin J
I had an MOT in August and the garage put it through as a 'non-catalysed vehicle' as I had both mine out, 1996 Jap TT. I didn't ask them to do it either... but the fact my fiancee's father knows the owners may have influenced them I suppose. Either way, they did it without asking - purely based on the fact they didn't find any when they had it up on the ramp I expect.

Smallshinyant
Cars MOT is not up until the end of the month, but thought i would give it a go today anyway to see what needs doing. Took it to a garage i have never been too before asked for an MOT he said sure 2 O'clock. I handed the car over he drove it off . Turns out he sub-contracts the mot's to another garage. Anyway he got back an hour and half later. Failed on FogLight being to pink and a damaged tyre wall. So my new mechanic friend(who turns out lives in the same block as me) painted a new fog light for me, and by pure chance at the bottom of a pile of part worn tyres had an exact size/make/model of tyre to match the one coming off. £90 later and a re-visit tomorrow to inspect the changes a good MOT love my n/a
