Right so ok yesterday doctor said he believes that i have pneumonia (lovely i know) been coughing really badly for 4 weeks now and starting to get some blood in it. have had 3 different types of antibiotics that have done absolutely jack all for me. Need to go for a X-ray within the next 2 days to confirm my doctors diagnosis :(

was dreading to go back to the doctors yesterday because after matching my symptoms online i kind of knew it.

anyways this morning at work (see my determination?) i pulled out a new box of paracetamol that i bought from boots a few days back. i noticed its the boots own brand one which is about £1.20 or something but i have seen other paracetamol, same quantity and mg size of pills for double/triple the price of the boots! any specific reason to this?

They are all the same, the generic medicines are made to the same 'recipe' as brand names in the uk.

Why are you taking paracetemol for pneumonia?

ive got antibiotics for it but im taking paracetamol aswell because my chest is very sore and painful from all the coughing :(

doctor said my one isnt life threatening, its an infection in my lungs and that ill be ok in a few weeks. he said i have to drink lots and lots of fluids every day so that all the mucus and infectious crap rises up.

I had pneumonia last year and was in hospital inside 10 days, i had a rageing sore throat to start with followed by a horrid cough, i only coughed up a horrid green sludge and no blood.

The day before i was admitted to the hospital i could barely climb 1 flight of stairs to get to my doctors office.

I was put on intravenous antibiotics, oxygen and some other medication which took a week in hospital to turn my condition round before they would let me out.

I lost nearly 2 stone inside 3 weeks and hardly eat anything in 4 weeks, i couldn't lie down, sleep etc etc

Are you sure you have pneumonia because my doctor said if i'd left it another week, making it 3 weeks from the start i'd have been in serious trouble.

Im not sure about cheap drugs being less effective than expensive ones but if you do have pneumonia you'll need more than Paracetamol to fix it.

hi bud, yep i had the same symptoms as you. i have visited the doctor 3 times in 4 weeks so i have been closely monitered. i have also lost my appetite, havent drank anything but water for weeks (not even diluted juices) and just dont feel like eating anything at all. i sometimes get really breathless but I cough hard and alot of thick mucus comes out which leaves me cleared up for a lil while and my chest opens up like normal.

well the xray will confirm but the doctor said when he had that hearing tool on and i coughed he could hear the actual sludge in the mid to lower sections of the lungs. at first he thought it would just be bronchitis when he saw me 2 weeks ago but with the location in my lungs and now the blood streaks he said hes pretty sure.

My doctor took one look at me, listened to my lungs and phoned the local hospital to see if i could be admitted straight away. I was on an antibiotic drip, saline drip and oxygen inside 2 hrs after seeing him.

Im really supprised your at 4 weeks with this and not in hospital like i was, time is not on your side with Pneumonia and if left too long can cause lasting damage to you lungs.

My x rays didn't show up very clearly and i had to have a CT scan

What size antibiotics are you taking ?

The tested my sludge 3 times and found nothing nasty in it, nothing showed up in my blood or urine either, they still have no idea what started mine and at the very begining they thought i'd got swine flu hence me getting quite ill as it was 10 days before i was diagnosed with Pneumonia

My medical advisor across the breakfast table suggests that you trade up to Co-codamol instead of Paracetemol at 8/500 strength, which is available over the counter.

lol, mum said the same thing this morning! stupid co-codamol! i will get some later on, paracetamol doesnt do anything anymore.

It was the only time in my life i thought i was going to die.

Same here, i was next to an 80 year old guy on the ward and he had a higher blood/oxygen level than i did, mine was under 90% which is pretty bad.

Scared the crap out of me

my first course was amoxcilin and then i was on another one that began with C and had amox somehwere in its name and now finally yesterday i have my 3rd prescription of antibiotics here which says CLARITHROMYCIN TABLETS 500MG 14 TABS.

Doctor was adament that i shouldnt delay the x-ray and get it done within two days and then come back to him.

breathing wise im really not that bad, i cough throughout the day and my inhaler helps a lot when i feel too tight chested. in the morning though when i wake up i cough for 2-3 minutes none stop and then i am properly grasping to get air in.

Has your doctor taken a swab of the mucus?

Your antibiotics should be individually matched to the infection you have. Although I am not a doctor, I have spent a lot of time under the care of the NHS and am therefore semi qualified....:D

H.

yes made me cough a chunk of it up into a lil cup. i know he prescribed my new antibiotics yesterday :(

Surely you should be going to the doctors rather than trying to fix yourself ?

How long have you been on the antibiotics ?

Sorry mate im not trying to panic you, just telling what happened to me.

I'd be getting a second opinion mate if your on your 3 rd course of antibiotics

I was on 250mg antibiotics for 4-5 days which didn't do jack, 2 days later i was in hospital

Get it sorted bud, my best mate nearly lost his old man last year to double pneumonia, he was in hospital 6 weeks, and in a induced coma for 2 of those, also had blood poisoning! I think the time it takes to recover depends on how fit and well you are generally! He was 56, over weight and smoked 10 cigars a day and had for 30 years!

Get well soon chap

The recovery time also depends on how quickly its diagnosed and treated, took me about 3 months or so to get back to normal.

I had smoked 20 a day for 25 yrs though, now im into 14 months of 0 ciggies

I have no idea how i got my Pneumonia, the doctors thought mine was a virul infection and had no idea where or what i caught it from, i went a bit mental when i got home and sprayed just about everything with anti bacterial cleaners etc lol

my first and 2nd course tabs were 250mg i think. this new prescription though is saying 500mg tabs but instead of taking 3 a day with the other 2 i have to take this one once every 12 hours.

dude i had actually quit smoking over 10 days before i got sick. do you think it could be a contributing factor in the sense that my lungs are clearing themselves out?
