craig l
My ps pumps been whining for a few weeks now only for a couple of minutes on start up then its fine. Tryed bleeding it didnt work. Started it tonight now its whining and grinding really bad steering wheel hardly moves at low revs, moves a bit with higher revs ive bought one from richardstock1 which should come in a couple of days. What damage will it cause if i drive it cos i'll park it up until its fixed.
Terminator
If you can I would leave it until you can swap it. Not sure but you might end up with fragments of pump around the system, probably best avoided.
SteveC
Are you sure that the filter in the reservoir isn't blocked? If it is, then you will get the symptoms you have described.

craig l
right call me thick had a look today how do you get the filter out its a sealed unit
VIL
No it is sealed in the reservoir. There are a few threads on here on about the best way to clean it. I had a PAS failure, steering very noisy and got progressively heavier until it was almost solid and eventually it started to pi$$ PAS fluid all over the place. SteveC
Take the reservoir off and clean it out with something - I used petrol. The filter doesn't come out, just gently use a small paint brush on it to loosen the goo stuff.

Terminator
Are you hoses modified in any way? I had to lengthen mine due to moving my reservoir. Under load one of the hoses collapsed the noise was terrible, steering very heavy. Thought I had blown the pump. New hose sorted the problem. You need someone to check the hoses while you turn the steering wheel. I was working on the car by myself so only spotted it when I got someone the turn the wheel for me. I was about to condemn the pump. Edited October 5, 2010 by Terminator (see edit history)
