Abz
Nothing will change! the wife & I are on a decent wage working full time but the amount of tax which is paid is eye watering espcially if you needed to work a weekend or so and you get paid overtime. We will continue to pay huge amounts of tax, the government will still spend £150 a time to replace light bulbs & give millions to local councils\benefits no matter how much we moan. Talking about councils I don't understand how they run out of money each year & need a bigger budget? I was told by a friend who works for a council that they have been told to make sure they empty the budget by the end of the FY or it will be reduced the following year! Don't we pay enough taxes for everything? You have a tax for everything. How do other countries do it? http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/money/tax/article2899499.ece

This is common in the civil service. Central government decides how much money to give each dept depnding on how much they "needed" (i.e. used) last year. If they don't use it all, govt thinks that they didn't need it all and hence it will be reduced next year.
imi
I agree with everything you said, except the union part im afraid, They have a place in the system. what is the point of the unions?
supra-ireland
I was told by a friend who works for a council that they have been told to make sure they empty the budget by the end of the FY or it will be reduced the following year! This is common all over. If their local budget isn't used up by the end of the tax year then their budget for next year will be slashed. Over here you always notice a large amount of road works in Feb-March. Mainly down to local councils trying to use up their budget before April 1st... Wez
Heard on the Radio this morning that families with loads of kids claiming benefit will be hit as they will have take responsibility themselves instead of being given handouts. I wonder how long it will be before the namby pamby do gooders come along and claim human rights. Stop giving them money, they should have vouchers for basics like food, elec, gas and clothes. If they want nice new TVs and games consoles get a fapping job.

Lower class = claiming benefits Middle class = paying a mortgage/owning a home Upper class = super rich How's that for a sweeping generalisation? Snooze
Not bad, Gaz, but I think there's still a "working class" inbetween your lower and middle definitions. They're not entirely the coal miner/factory workers of yesteryear, but anyone who's getting by with a wage that covers their rent, or theire living costs whilst under someone else's roof, but can't afford to buy their own home with today's ridiculously over-inflated prices. ....and your Lower Class definition should probably be "living solely off benefits" rather than just "claiming benefits"! Nah not for me. I think it's a three-teir system still, with the lower class being the people claiming benefit and the middle being on the property ladder. Of course there are exceptions, but a basic three-teir system is still in effect IMO.
Snooze
A bunch of people I know are renting (they can't afford the £50k+ deposit you need for a London property), but are earning good salaries in the commercial sector. Where do they fit? And anyway - being on the property ladder is representative of wealth, not social status. Most new teachers/nurses/policemen/etc. these days don't earn enough to buy their first property, for example. We own (well - partly!) a house, but get some benefits. Does that make me lower class? If you know where to look and what to look for, you can buy property in more situations than most people realise right now. You'd need to save maybe £3k-£4kish for a deposit, but it can be done. I know, because I'm doing it as we speak.
jagman
And when the property " ladder" turns into. "snake" , with huge long term debts , it becomes a great class leveller .... So we help out these forced speculators ?and the rest well they can have vouchers... So now debt is the new wealth..

Snooze
So now debt is the new wealth.. And even more so with the amount of inflation that low interest rates and ongoing quantitive easing is going to create!
jagman
It's a strange world where you can be too big to fail having lost a Gazillion quid , but too small to actually use cash , cos you don't have any . How about we Quantatatively ease the vouchers ? ...no wait
imi
what is the point of the unions? any comments on the program that i linked to Tony....
Tony
Is there a point to local produce if it is not cost effective? I guess that is what she recognised and tried to re-align our nation to a services industry.... Crap, just away of lining the pockets of the real rich & stuff the working class, who get mugged off by thinking if they own a house there middle class. Got you under control by DEBIT. If you work for someone YOU ARE WORKING CLASS. People forget there roots in this country. Sorry rant over:d Oh and the point of the unions is to give the workers a voice.
