hogmaw
Going down the motorway in 5th gear at 70 in the Astra and all of a sudden the power cuts out, but the engine still runs. Can't accelerate much, but can trundle along at 60 no probs. If I put the car into 4th the revs go high but pressing the accelerator doesn't do anything at all. Basically, at high revs in any gear (3 or 4k on this car) the accelerator pedal doesn't seem to work! Any ideas?

Basically, at high revs in any gear (3 or 4k on this car) the accelerator pedal doesn't seem to work! Any ideas? Just incase you aren't very mechanically minded, have you checked the oil level recently? How is the coolant temperature when the rev's top out? Sounds to me like overheating from not enough coolant (leaking rad?) or critical oil level and semi-seizure. Only things I can think of from experience that produce the same symptoms. The power loss could be from detonation and timing retard to protect the engine. If it gets too hot, it will ignite the air/fuel charge before TDC or whatever advance is set and it will try to run backwards, (causing major damage if severe enough), so the engine waits until later to fire the spark plug/s and you lose the 'sweet spot' and then some! Could be a failing fuel pump or blocked injector/s, air/filter. Could be many things. Try to find someone to ride with you who has a 'sixth sense' about engines, like a mechanic. What won't do any harm and might help is a bottle of Wynn's or Lucas injector cleaner in a low fuel tank, so it's quite concentrated. Will give a noticeable improvement in power if the injectors are dirty and a much cleaner exhaust. hackin_n_bashin
Mate had this with his 54 plate astra, does the engine management light come on at all? His blinked on shortly, turns out it was a dodgy coil pack
