Tannhauser
I might have put this list on here before, I forget. A young chap I know asked for some ideas for 'interesting' films. Here's what I gave him: Dogville Lars von Trier’s gripping minimalist drama. Nicole Kidman is actually really good Forbidden Planet Freud meets The Tempest in iconic 1950s sci-fi. “Monsters from the id!” The Vanishing Truly creepy Dutch-Belgian film, not to be confused with useless Hollywood remake Run, Lola, Run Poundingly entertaining German film. Famka Potente (sp??) lights up the screen. Dancer in the Dark Lars von Trier musical(!) Many hate it. I thought it was brilliant and emotionally lacerating. Thom Yorke and Bjork soundtrack. It’s a Wonderful Life Ancient but uplifting Frank Capra classic. Weep with joy. Happiness Todd Solenz’s blacker than black comedy about the grotesqueness of sexual desire Magnolia Complex interwoven stories of redemption. Tom Cruise is unrecognisably brilliant as a vile lifestyle guru. Crash (not the David Cronenburg one) Social and racial tensions explored through the interlocking stories of the key characters. Satisfyingly grown-up. Atomized Weird, interesting, disturbing German film Pan’s Labyrinth Del Tormo’s best – brutality and fairytales starkly juxtaposed Brazil Terry Gilliam’s bleakly dystopian satire Tetsuo Iron Man My partner’s most hated film of all time. Relentlessly barmy Japanese surrealism. Pi I don’t remember much about this except that I liked it Roxanne Steve Martin’s charming retelling of Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac Amelie Quirky in every respect – from the elfin Audrey Tatou to the whirling Yann Thiersen score. Jean de Florette and Magnon des Sources Leisurely paced but gently engrossing tales with brilliant Gerard Depardieu performances Delicatessen A French black comedy about cannibalism – what’s not to like? Mulholland Drive David Lynch messes with your head in his take on a Hollywood detective story Eraserhead David Lynch again. John Nance wanders around with the same pained expression on his face throughout this bleak, surreal film noir classic. Blue Velvet And one more David Lynch. Dennis Hopper is as mad as toast in this tale of the dark underbelly of a wholesome American town.
Matt H
You bet your sweet ass i am! Sod ya then Matt,.... we need another stunt cock. Charlotte is out It's on! Umm, I'll work on charlotte, she'll poo poo it at first, but once she see's the benifits package I'm putting together, she'll be like a horse to water
Matt H
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I'm not one for subtitles, I feel like you can’t get lost in a film when there’s a constant reminder of reality at the bottom. Pan’s Labyrinth for example; a film with such atmosphere just didn’t work with subtitles for me. But it didn't matter too much in this picture. It has a great story line with a brilliant character in Lisbeth, performed brilliantly by Noomi Rapace – both the story and the Character developed really well. I hear Hollywood are doing a remake of this film in English, but I wouldn’t hold out for it over the current version as the subtitles don’t detract as much as I thought they would. Godmutha
Really good movies that get over looked (violent) The Devil's Rejects: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395584/ I walked out of the cinema half way through this film. Not impressed at all. Rocknroller is one of my fairly recent favourites. On par with Snatch, Lock Stock, Layer Cake etc.
Matt H
I walked out of the cinema half way through this film. Not impressed at all Because of the violence or just the film in general? Rocknroller is one of my fairly recent favourites. On par with Snatch, Lock Stock, Layer Cake etc. Rock'n'roller was average. It certainly sit nowhere near Snatch or Lock Stock. Layer cake was good, but then again no Snatch or Lock Stock either imo.
SupraStar 3000
Have to say,.. I'm a huge Rob Zombie fan. Just love House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects Maybe you need to watch the first. Just don't expect fantastic move plots, just gore and half naked girls. oh,.. and Sheri Moon is hot

Dances with wolves (DC) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099348/ And a real classic....! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060196/ Both have amazing music scores. Chris-B
A suggestion for the zombie lovers among us: - Zombie by Lucio Fulci - Thought this was a great film, very gory in parts. One scene that is rather memorable involves an eyeball and a sharp spike.

I find the opposite. I find subtitles force me to concentrate much more, and I get drawn in as a result. I wish my language skills were good enough to watch them without, but that's never going to happen.

I'd rather eat my own hand than watch a badly-dubbed one though.
Thorin
Being a fan of Studio Ghibli I've watched a few of Hayao Miyazaki's films both dubbed and subtitled. ...but then dubbed cartoons aren't so bad as live action films.
Tannhauser
I'd rather eat my own hand Excellent, I'll be using that from now on as an alternative to my usual "I'd rather split my shins open with a chisel".

caseys
Infernal Affairs (trilogy) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338564/ Spawned 'The Departed' which I refuse to see. I doubt they could better the original trilogy. Battle Royale http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266308/ (Ed may like this - lots of japanese school girls killing each other in uniform) Zatoichi http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363226/ Almost Famous (the extended director's cut anyway) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181875/
