Chris Wilson
I am involved as a small scale sponsor of a couple of projects to save the cheetah in Africa from being shot and poisoned to extinction by indigenous farmers protecting their herds from them. One of the most successful ways has been implemented in the last 10 years, that being to supply the farmers with suitable flock protection dogs as puppies that will grow big enough to take on a cheetah and also survive the very extreme climate. We breed and support Anatolian Karabash dogs, and these have proven very successful for this purpose. I just had a look see how the project has been going in a new region. If you are interested have a look at the link below, and then the sentimental tosh in the section called "Guarding Dog Project" http://www.cheetah.co.za/an_description.html

Chris Wilson
Latest news: Dear Chris, We have been having some ups and downs lately. With some great news and some sad news combined. We are all excited as our Western Kalahari camp is developing and we have just completed our Livestock Guarding Dog demonstration area for farmers to learn more about this effective technique. We've completed our recent camera trap survey and are looking forward to sharing the results. We've also been busy raising awareness for predator conservation through our Best Livestock Guarding dog competition and workshops in the Western Kalahari Conservation Corridor. But as is the nature of sad news it can overshadow things and we are disappointed to report that our 2 cheetah brothers, rehabilitated and released in the North of Botswana in July this year, have met their end in the form of injury and lions. Its not the end we were hoping for of course. However, we must focus on the positive outcomes, such as the increase in understanding of rehabilitation; the great collaborations that developed during the exercise between government, NGO's and the safari industry and providing freedom to animals whose only other option was a life of captivity. Please check out our news section for more information at http://www.cheetahbotswana.com/news.php So we'll keep our heads up and remember how much we have achieved over 2010. Overall, its been a great year! This has been made possible by the ongoing assistance and encouragement of our international network of supporters. Thanks to you and all those that have helped CCB achieve its goals in 2010! Best wishes, Rebecca and the CCB Team Cheetah Conservation Botswana
