I suggest people stop complaining really - it's a free service.

Ah, but it isn't is it!?! Facebook generates its income from targeted advertising and the subsequent interaction with those adds. Without users there would be no cash flow, ergo, users have every right to complain! All that uploaded personal information doesn't just sit there idle ;)

Essentially, it is a free service. Only the advertising isn't, but that's the same with any service and the ratio between normal users and advertisers is not worth comparing.

I suspect on the large part that most people don't care what happens to the data they slap up there, so from that perspective it's a free service. But that data is collected and used for financial benefit. A little bit of your life to top up Zuckerberg's billions doesn't hurt anyone, right?

There was a great series on BBC2 called Digital Revolution or something. The lady in the series said that most people dont grasp the concept of just how much information they are giving away for this 'free' service and how they also dont realise that once the data is out there it aint never going back in the bottle. Google cache among many others stores it all for posterity.

Think now about some of the pictures that people have on Facebook and the Twits they have posted and how those will appear to a potential employer in 2 or 3 years time.

I see a lot of people being very embarassed in a few years time when friends, employers and spouses find out in graphic detail what they have been up to..

So think about it kids, just say no to Facebook.

It made for interesting viewing. Dr. Aleks Krotoski has written some very interesting articles on the subject that's worth a read. I don't think it clicks with a lot of people just what happens when they hit that send button. I can't say I don't use Facebook myself, but I'm very careful what goes on there. Some of the personal information people put up there will never cease to amaze me. Saying that, I'd hate to think what Google search has on me from some of my searches. :innocent:
