Terrible Morning

What a horrible morning I’ve had. :(

Last Monday, my office was told that cuts had to be made in order that the business could be sustained into the future. There were various groups of people that were told that they could be put at risk of redundancy – I was one of them; along with a close colleague and friend. Basically, there would be one job between the two of us in our ‘pool’.

To make matters worse, I was flying out on the Tuesday (day after) to Ibiza for a short holiday. Luckily enough, being in Ibiza means that you kind of forget about everything, but when I returned at the weekend, Tuesday was looming and all I could think about was what would happen. Thinking about paying the mortgage (I live on my own) and maintaining the car etc has been playing heavily on my mind. With the climate as it is, I would be extremely lucky to jump into an equivalent role matching what I’m on now – I’ve been bricking it.

As my name was called this morning to hear my fate, my heart was in my throat. The director tells me I’m not at risk and they have chosen to keep me on over my colleague. My heads been messed up all morning. I’ve stayed on and I’m happy about it, but equally a good friend of mine has now lost his job and I feel really mixed up. There’s also been a rook of other redundancies too. The worst thing is the anticipation, just not knowing. :(

Just thought I’d get that down in words.

I'm not that kinda person though - I can't just feel elated about the whole thing, it’s been quite stressful and at the end of the day, someone else is going through a really bad time now while I’m ok. I have fought for it and put my case for staying across as best as I could, but still not an easy pill to swallow.

Personally I think you should make a stand again the companies terrible ethics and quit....

It won't achieve anything but will help liven this thread up a bit... :D

lol. I'm a senstive person, but not career suicidal! :D

Better him that me of course, but better neither of us really.

There's very little you can do about it. You're obviously better for the role than he is, so it's Darwin's fault really.

Whoever stays or goes it's sad and it doesn't feel nice.

Indeed, those that didn't make the cut have been given the rest of the day off to go home. They must be feeling sh!t right now :(

A holiday in Ibiza and a job to come back to?

Have to admit, not the most typical usage of the word "horrible"..........

It's the the not knowing. Spending the last week up until ~11.00 not knowing what will happen. Then you've got the fallout from this morning to contend with - it's really not a nice process.

Oh no, he's far more popular than me, I'm just better at the job that he! :D

I can imagine, don't know what I'd do without the income!

Funnily enough, it wasn't the income that got to me. It was the lack of personal interaction with other people. It is surprising how this affects you after a few months.

I remember really looking forward to the wife and kids coming home every night as it had been so quiet all day. Now I am working again, I can't stand them....:D;)

Agreed - when I had my small skiing fail I was off work for 18 months and that was soul destroying. I was itching to get back after that, and found I enjoyed work a lot more when I did get another job.

I only had 7 months but the combined upset of being in plaster, losing my job, the injury taking longer than expected the heal and then the stress of looking for another job, all took their toll.

This all pailed into insignificance once Ian Ian started calling in regularly for a brew, then you really know what depression is....:innocent::D

I didn't mind getting made redundant so much. I got a nice pay off that cleared all my debts and then some.

Was sort of package did you get? Ours is pretty poor, it's basically twice the statutory entitlement. So regardless of what your salary is you only get £760 per week for each year of employment. Albeit this being tax free, it’s not going to go very far.

I guess it’s not that bad if you can walk straight into another job of a similar or better salary, but that’s where things would get pretty tricky for me. The job availability in my sector is currently pretty bleak.
