for any aviation buffs,.. this helicopter has only been in the UK a few days and still has the chaff and flare boxes fitted to the side. I'm going back tonight with a 12v car battery to set those bad boys off. Should be pretty spectacular. LOL

You'll be needing 28 volts then mate :D If that floats your boat wait until you see the mk3 fat tank SF ones. I'm finishing the last one of 8 next week. That'll be the culmination of 2 1/2 years of bloody hard work 14 hour shifts. They did a program on us Britains secret engineers and I featured on that. My next project may well be working on the Julius program upgrading that helicopter you see there to glass cockpit. I tend not to get too excited about them as I work on them for 13 hours a day 6 or 7 days a week :D

the cockpit pics are cool and really bring it home how exposed the guys flying these are, i read a book years ago about a US helicopter pilot in Vietnam flying Huey's called "Chickenhawk", on one mission he kept hearing this strange tick tick noise when coming into a hot LZ, after several tick ticks he realised what was causing it when he noticed the 7.62mm holes in the plexiglass

BTW guys the blades reversing or slowing down on the clip is down to the camera shutter speed running at the same speed as the rotors, its like a strobe effect

You would never get me in a Chinook, not in a million years, when youre in the cockpit just look up to see a dirty great gearbox right above your swede, and lift the top covers to see that driveshaft. And dont even open 'the broom cupboard! Im bad enough in a Merlin!

Autorotated once in a Squirel (training chopper the RAF use) That was terrifying lol

The pilot showed me the linking axle between the rotor heads and opened a little inspection door (that might have been the broom cupboard). The shaft was tiny, about as thick as my wrist and when i said, surly that can't be strong enough i was amazed when the pilot hit it with a wrench and said, "yep, hear that! Its hollow too". Scary stuff.

Lol Bry, Im a fast jet man through and through, all that rotating wing bollox isnt for me! Reheat ground runs, thats where its at :D

Ed, the broom cupboard is on the left just before you enter the cockpit, its a box rammed full of control rods, bell cranks, hydraulic actuators and all manner of magic, it the place where the pilots inputs are split and sent to the 2 rotor heads. I do really admire the Chinny though, seeing them in Afghan when they come in to refuel was really cool. Bombing in at a load of knots, then simultaniously sticking it on its arse, rotating 180 degrees and dumping it on the ground, impressive :)

OMG! What an amazing experience!!!

Just went to see the helicopter and crew depart. Ended up chatting with the pilot who coincidentally, and rather strangely, shared a passion for model aircraft. (you'd think he'd be bored of flying by the time he clocked off). Anyway,...

Really nice chap and was telling me some amazing stories about auto rotation and special ops missions etc.

As I shook his hand and said goodbye he said, go grab a video camera and get ready for a exciting departure. Pointing towards the railway embankment he said "stand over there and I'll make 3 low level passes. Just don't put it on youtube as i might get a bollocking back at base"

WOW! What can i say,... Bloody amazing. Standing on the backing he did three passes really low and as he passed, gave me the thumbs up out the window. Bloody amazing.

I'm in totally respect to those boys.

What a wonderful job. wow.

The video is on a film camera, so make take some time to convert.
