PC mouse freezing problem (Gyration air mouse)

Over the past few months my PC has developed an annoying problem concerning the mouse.

The mouse is a rather fancy Gyration Air mouse jobby (the old style one that is no longer supported by Gyratin for those in the know), but depite all its fancyness it appears as a standard mouse to Windows. I'va also tried a second mouse of the same kind and that also exhibits the problem so I think its more down to the PC or software.

On to the problem:

After booting up normally everything works fine for a while, but a few seconds after launching the first applcation the mouse will freeze for about 5 seconds. This then repeats at regaular intervals until it either starts behaving normally afer a few minutes or I have to do something like disable the mouse in device manager and re-enable it or unlplug the USB cable and plug it in again. Last night I had to uninstal the driver and then allow the mouse to be recognised again by plugging it back in. Any of the above usually makes it work again but every time I reboot I have to go through the same process.

I've checked for dodgy processess using Task Manager and inspected the usual places in the registry for unwanted stuff loading after boot up and found nothing unusual. As I said I've tried a diffeent mouse already. A good test would be to get a regular desktop USB mouse and see if it happens with that.

It feels like software as if I do something to force the mouse to be recognised again after boot up then it usually works, but when on earth could be causing that is beyond me, and I can't trace it back to anything particular that I have changed. Are there any registry tweaks that can force the mouse driver to be loaded last or something?

On a different note, has anyone got one of the new-generation Gyration keyboards / mice? I'm tempted to fork out for one as mine is getting very tired now after about 7 years use!

Sounds like you have done all the standard checks. Is it an old machine it is being used on. Couple of things i can think it maybe.

- If its cabled loose connection somewhere, causing the mouse to power cycle so the machine keeps checking it as new hardware.

- Your USB port may not being powering it correctly. Have you got a seperate set of ports you could try it on.

hmmm, sounds like im saying it may have something to do with power.

I've checked the external cables but I just realised that last night I moved mouse from a USB on an internal hub to a USB on the main board so if one of the cables from the main board to the backplate was dodgy that might explain it. The keyboard and mouse use the same reciever so if it is power cycling the keyboard will go down too. I'll check tonight.

I presume you have tried a different USB port? You sure it is just the mouse locking up or everything? (Try using the keyboard when it happens).

I've moved it a few times (I have 6 to choose from) but as above I just moved it back to the original port as it only seemed to be a temporary solution. I'm fairly sure its just the mouse locking up but to be honest I've not double checked (I just sit there waiting for it to come back to life). I could easily check this out tonight.

Thanks for the pointers (no pun intended :) )
