Nic
My neighbours use to have a Caucasian Mountain Dog which was the size of a lion. My Lab pup once ran into their house to raid his food bowl, as I stepped through their door to fetch him, the dog very gently clamped it's jaws around my upper arm, I VERY nervously stepped back out and he let go, he made the perfect doorman...... "If you're not on the list, you're not coming in".

edge
I know some guys who train and supply guards with dogs for property and personal protection. Alot of these chaps now cross breed to get the temperament that will suit the dogs working life. Some are neopolitan cross pressa's and they will take the owner out to get an intruder but are not illegal but i soon think the pressa will be next on the band dog list due to all the plumbs that own them. Just get a g/sheppard and bring it like a normal and leave the guard dog signs up and that normally enough to deter. You are biting off more than you could ever hope to chew. It would be cheaper to employ a proffesional company that will provide "safe" but effective security as you will be fined a huge amount or even sent down for a few years if you try it yourself. S for the fila's they need to be introduced to people on a regular basis for 3 - 6 months from birth as they will not accept anyone or nearly anything new after this period and will do its upmost to try and kill but it would not think twice about laying down its life to protect its family. They are an extreme dog best suited for someone living in the middle of nowhere with no friends plus they are banned here in the uk. I was chatting to edd reid the other week ( this guy was responsable for bringing pitballs into the uk in the 60's) and its a shame that people are starting to bring other unknown breeds into the uk for bad reasons as it would be nice to own some these great breeds at points in my life. On another note - my aunt breeds dog bordeaux and english balls and another chap i know breeds south african boerboels although you need deep pockets to buy and own one of these but they are simply huge but cuddly at the same time. jazz1
Well spoke to my dads good mate who runs businesses and turns out he has 3 k9 dogs. He told me to stay clear off the rotty as one once ripped half his arm off non trained type. He's had two GS for five years now and he loves them. He recommended a place near me he bought his and said the guys brilliant. But he said the best in the uk is this guy but he's way way too expensive http://www.a1k9.co.uk/news.asp
neo2810
Do you really expect to be cuddling up to your killing machine in front of a nice crackling fire in the evenings? Honestly, if you want a cuddly pet, buy a cat. If you're buying a guard dog, treat it like one...

AndrewOW
Just get a normal dog to have as a pet, or a rat, whatever, and install a decent alarm system linked to the police. Job done, and we can all get on with our lives.
jazz1
If you care to listen you can get different highly trained dogs for different specifications. My dads mate has had his 5 years and also has them as pets has he had a press issues no. He also explained who to go too and explain my situation as they can provide different types. JustGav
If you care to listen.... Awfully rich coming from someone who goes around till they get the answer they want and then declares that as the right answer! There are other things I'd like to add, but I can't, so carry on. Rats are trainable too. Have you thought about using them for surveillance purposes? Obviously, night vision goggles for rats are a bit fiddly to put on, but they'd be a worthwhile investment for sure. This is about a daft idea as yours, so I thought I'd keep the options open. Chris Wilson
Why do you need this animal? Still not sure if it's to guard premises, or guard a person? A personal protection dog can indeed be a pet, and you need the bond to give the protection drive. A guard dog that (illegally) roams a warehouse or building site on its own needs totally different training to protect an inanimate area. What you don't want with a personal protection dog is a lot of strangers stroking or touching it. They can still be good pets within a family environment. I have a GSD and it is a pet, it is raised with the family, and is obedient, she hasn't been raised as a guard dog, but will still bark at the door until she is told it is enough and then moves away allowing ANYONE in the family to open the door (including my 8yr old) where she will sit a good distance away. She is not trained to be aggressive, however she is trained to be obedient. If she ever shows aggression then I will have to rethink things because of her size, she is MORE than capable of ripping me or indeed any family member apart.
