Does the spring matter on the coilover?

I know the title sounds a little confusing. What I would like to know isdoes it matter what springs on the coilover matter? Would the wrong spring effect the dampers? Giving too much pressure on the coilover and etc.? The reason i am asking is because I might get a second hand coilovers el sport sand it comes with Hks springs.
