Alternative medicine - anyone use it?

Does anyone practice or believe in homeopathy here?

Fancy £68k a year for diluting garlic to 1:1,000,000

Staggering :-( I am amazed that with the budget cuts such hmm...'alternative medicine is offered on the nhs.

Then again a couple of friends swear by acupuncture (not sure if this is really alternative though), but just surprised medicinal practices are on the nhs which under clinical trials have zero basis above a placebo effect.

We have tryed everything for my condition one being homeopathy. And it was a load of codswholop! I just didnt bother going back after a few sessions.

Each to there own, homeopathy works if u believe it does... coz there stuff they give it so mineute it wouldnt effect a mouse! So you telling your self its helping... kinda like if you take a head ach pill u feel better pretty quick coz you know its goin to help but no way the pill will head ach pill will get into your system that quick... Sadly my condition is so phsical that wont work....

Try it if u like mate, but the homeopathy people seem a lil crazy to me and 99% of doctors dont beleive in it...

The pharmacists at work are constantly researching weird and wonderful tablets that in-patients bring with them as part of their routine.

Someone today was taking tablets with blue-green algae in. The stuff that postponed a recent outdoor swimming event in the lake district because of health risks.

People are crazy.

What did folk use before "modern medicine"? Just because it isn't mainstream doesnt make it bad! Just need to separate the good from the bad. Its not alternative medicine, its complimentry medicine, the clue is in the title, its supposed to work with mainstream medicines not as an alternative to!! Sitting under a pyramid isn't going to cure cancer for example, but working with mainstream medicine can help bring a state of relaxation which would enable the "patient" to feel less stressed and more focussed on trying to combat the malady.

Also, I think it's pertinent to point out that

a) the applicant must be fully-qualified GP

b) the salary is a RANGE from £37-68k

I would wonder why any GP who's probably undergone 10+ years of medical training/education (something you need to be motivated/enthusiastic to do) would then switch to alternative medicine.

If "alternative medicine" actually worked... it would just be called "medicine".

Agreed, actually a very succinct way of stating it sir.

Maybe because they've gotten tired of the Western medical approach of "manufactured medication solves everything"?

I believe we are close to a watershed moment in medicine to move away from such a dependence on pharmaceuticals.

I wouldn't even say it's a western world thing. I'm happy to accept anything if there can be a clinical trial where tests can be done stringently, be it "manufactured" or "non-manufactured" medicine. Just look at the benefits of some chinese medicine which is centuries old, I wouldn't say that was manufactured but some herbs/medicinal remedies have been proved clinically to be beneficial, others not (ear candles, some herbal medicine etc). And yes I'd even agree things like the placebo effect or curing psychosomatic illness.

Are we? Can you give me anything I can look at about it? Not a jibe there, but if you truly believe we are on the cusp of something I'd like to read up about it.

I would agree, to some extent, that I would prefer that products have a strongly evidence based reason for their use. However, Arthur Clarke's 3rd law (Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic) is relevant here - how can we perform double blind, placebo controlled trials if we haven't gotten the sufficient technology to be able to examine the subject? For example, we know that logically because the human body produces electrical current, it should also produce a magnetic field, but we do not have sensitive enough equipment yet to examine this in detail.

As to any information, there aren't many articles that directly address this - it's my feeling based on the direction of research. Vague, I know. I'll have a look around and post something relevant if I can.
