Laptop repairs, any specialist here?

Ive got a Toshiba netbook, model is NB200, its about 18 months old and its developed a sporradic powering up fault.

When you open the lid and turn on the power button, the power light illuminates, the hard drive spools up then stops and thats it, no screen illumination, nothing. Doesnt matter if its on mains power or battery.

I say sporradic because maybe 1 out of every 100 attempts it works fine. So is it worth repairing, anybody have an idea on what it could be?

Cheers in advance

If you can track it down to something like a duff motherboard then have a look on egay and see if any are about.

I resoldered the charging jack on my laptop and it took nearly an hour to get at it and about another 2 to put it back together. Next time it happens its going in the bin.

Ill have a look. Ive discovered if I leave it on a windowsill, somewhere cool and no battery or power hooked up it fires up first time every time, but if you go for a shut down and restart it does the powering up thing.

When you turn it on you get the DOS screen and an error message pertaining to PLX media or something, related? But once its on it operates fine, everything works fine.

Its unlikely an overheating issue then. It could be shorting out due to dust or the motherboard or associated part is up the duff.

You can try giving it a clean with a can on compressed air but I suspect its a hardware fault. What's the exact error message?

There is a used motherboard on ebay for £90, repair time would be a couple of hours so to get someone to fix it would be about £170 - £200, thats if it is the motherboard....

Ok, took it to bits, cleaned it out (although it wasnt dirty all) reassembled and its still the same. Half an hour somewhere cool and it works, very strange.

Error messages, on the boot screen I got 2 messages, one below the other :-

PXE-E61 and PXE-M0F Exiting ROM.

Mean anything?

Open it, find the bios battery and disconnect it for a couple of minutes, then put it back. Or may be it's the HDD, if you can boot to some OS check the SMART info (for Windows try SpeedFan or Everest).

The battery looks like this (may be a different color):

Why don't you just take it back to the shop for a new one / repairs? Won't cost you anything..

Its 18 months old so no warrantee, and if I took it to a shop the repairs will cost more than buying a new one.

Does it say OS not found?

Could be the HDD up the spout.....

Nope mate it works fine when booted up and indeed booting up, can access everything and no errors, just needs to be chilled first lol
