SupraJames
Well a few months back my car went down to Lee P to fix a problem, whilst there Lee did a compression test and sadly it showed that number 5 was around half what it should be. So chances are its a piston ring, piston or valve, now I dont have an unlimited budget to be able to pay someone to do this so after a chat with a few friends at the weekend, myself and 2 friends are going to have a go at a full engine rebuild over the winter to find and fix the issue, 1 mate used to work at a well known South Coast Tuner, other builds Toyota MR2 Drag Spec engines. We have not decided is we are going to fully remove the whole engine and strip and clean it, but we will have the time and space to do so. Also due to a new job I have access to Toyota genuine parts at trade prices. Now while we have the engine in bits I also plan to change the Valve stem seals as would be silly not to do them while the head is off, what I am asking is there anything else people would recommend I do and possible upgrades (on a reasonable budget) I can do while the engine is apart, and anything I should look out for, gaskets I will need to replace etc etc... List so far: Valve Stem Seals New Plugs Uprated Head Gasket (not sure which to go for) New Oil Filter + Oil Pressure Test Intercooler Upgrade Rad + Auto Cooler + Fans Thanks in advance
Lee P
I would pull the engine out mate, will be much easier. If it's rings it will all need to come out anyway.
SupraJames
Thanks Lee, we are just sorting a big workshop and engine crane as I type
Chris Wilson
Oil pump, all new bearing shells, new rings, careful measurement of bores and pistons, new water pump, new cam belt, new crank damper. New stem seals and a careful measure of guide and stem sizing to assess wear. Forget mods until it's 100% fit. It may well need a rebore and new pistons if any scoring has occurred. I would say all the above are needed otherwise it's likely to bite you. The engine needs to come out, be fully stripped and fully cleaned before checking and re-assembly. Anything less is madness, IMO.
