JimC
Hi guys, Im after a little advice from anyone who can help. I'm building a new property and am currently sorting out new connections for all utitlities. Water, electric and Gas are sorted and after submitting plans, each provider has quoted for new connections. However, I'm struggling with the phone/internet/TV. I dont know whether the property will be served by SKY TV or by Virgin cable TV. So, do i need to get a new BT line and a new virgin cable line put in? I have been told Virgin cable TV cannot use a BT line, but that Sky TV can operate down a virgin line, so why would anyone have a BT line over a vrgin line for a new property? To me, if a BT line is installed, all that offers over a virgin line is a BT phone. Everything else (i think) can come down the virgin fibre optic cable. Is this right guys? Please correct me if I'm wrong because right now I'm a little confused! I could simply get a virgin line and a BT line put in, but it seems daft to do so. At the end of the day, the property will need broadband, phone and TV capabilty. A new virgin cable would give all three Virgin services, and as far as I'm aware would also support SKY TV. Thanks for any help / advice in advance. Jim
Matt H
I'm confused. I thought all lines were BT lines. What's the difference between one person's piece of copper and some one elses? It's still a copper line. I think the house builder installs the cables then BT hook them up at the road side to the exchange. All virgin do is the fibre optic cable side of things. Surely you just need to install a phone cable and a fibre optics cable to allow said services to connect them at the road side? The only company that does connections is BT anyway - open reach. Any other company like Sky pay BT to activate a line.

I know I will get shot down here.....but I would go for Sky HD for your media and BT your phone, which you can then use Sky as your phone provider once you are out of contract with BT. But that's just my personal preference and aslso there is more likelyhood that BT will have a DP close by keeping the cost of the initial install down. Do Virgin have any sort of hub/street cab nearby? If so then go with them just for ease. I fear though if not they will want a load of cash to provide you with a fibre connection. JimC
Yeah, I have already dealt with Open Reach and they are coming to site in the next few days. The builder will be laying the cables on site and BT/Virgin will connect them in the road (where the mains are currebntly running), but I'm not fully clued up on which services are brought down which lines. I have been told by personel at Virgin that a virgin line would give capability for all virgin services and will also allow SKY tv capability, although I'm not totally convinced. This is a good point Shane and i take that on board. I'm trying to get some sense out of these guys and not getting anywhere!
