Tyson
When I change gear I get a metallic clatter as I change gear. I assume this is not normal, I am not a mechanical buff but it almost sounds like the gear linkage is loose ? If you get what I mean
pistonbroke
Is it as you lift the clutch back up?

Swampy442
Ive only driven 1 getrag and it clanged on every change.
Tyson
Ive only driven 1 getrag and it clanged on every change. I only notice it when changing below 3000 rpm but I think above that the exhaust drowns it out

I assume this is not normal, I am not a mechanical buff but it almost sounds like the gear linkage is loose ? If you get what I mean is this mainly low speed low gear (1st and 2nd) and when cold.................what is it like when warm and going for it and changing from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th, is it quiet and more slick? Also when you get back from this test or a normal drive, stand outside the car and then turn it off, does it rattle to a stop (they all tend to to some degree) what you are probably looking at is a tired/worn flywheel..... Graham S
I found mine to clonk/clang/twang (whatever you wanna call it!) in every gear, thats normal really.. Never had any problems with it either. Think thats just the way they are.

Yes to all the above Also when you get back from this test or a normal drive, stand outside the car and then turn it off, does it rattle to a stop (they all tend to to some degree) what you are probably looking at is a tired/worn flywheel..... Yes it does but if I depress the clutch when turning it off it doesn't rattle at all. So I have a worn flywheel then ? What kind of damage am I looking at from Mr T ? dude
Mr t if you want the factory damped one, if you want to go solid which will be moisier at tickover then Whiffbitz.

Can't find an oem one for less than 360 and that's from the states is it the same as the UK one? Is this about the right price? What difference will having a whiffbitz flywheel give me? Swampy442
Have you asked Toyota? An R154 one is something like 170 quid last time I asked, just an idea

2soops
I may be wrong but the clatter on tickover etc sounds more like the thrust bearing, especially if it goes away when you depress the clutch.
Tyson
I may be wrong but the clatter on tickover etc sounds more like the thrust bearing, especially if it goes away when you depress the clutch. I think you have misread something here. I never said there was a clatter on tick over or that it went away when I depressed the clutch, what I did say was that there is a clatter when actually changing gear and that depressing the clutch stop the little rattle when when I turn the car off. Chris Wilson
Has it got a standard clutch in it?
Scooter
Anyone know where to get one from? What are the affects of driving with a worn flywheel will it damage anything ? I pretty sure it doesn't..........I have owned 3 different 6 speeds and they all do it but my recent car made me realise how relatively nice, smooth and slack/clunk free they can be (but it still has a little of what you/I describe). It is one of those things with a 6 speed that can get ever so slightly gets worse and worse with time and you then don't notice just how bad it has become. Saying this depending on your feel/tolerance for this you may have a relatively ok flywheel and the change might not completely clear up the symptoms or you may indeed have a completely worn out one and changing it will improve things 100%..... .......best to try and compare to a few others first IMO. 2soops
I think you have misread something here. I never said there was a clatter on tick over or that it went away when I depressed the clutch, what I did say was that there is a clatter when actually changing gear and that depressing the clutch stop the little rattle when when I turn the car off. WoW, that told me!!! I just assumed it would be on tick over when you turned it off. If you refer to your quote above you definately say the rattle went away whilst having the clutch depressed when you turn it off. Am i getting confused between a rattle and a clatter? Was only trying to help!

Was only trying to help! I was replying to the quote above. It doesn't rattle all the time only when i switch it off and the clatter is only present when I change gear if that makes sense. I wasn't having a go i'm sorry if it came across that way.
2soops
I apologise too, I was a bit sarky with you. The noise you've described does sound like the free play you get between the clutch/thrust bearing/release arm rattling. Most cars do it to a certain extent depending on the free play. I am by no means a supra expert and it could well be the flywheel as others have suggested, i just put forward what i thought i may be Anyway mate, no hard feelings. Be great if you me know what it is when you do find out.
