Subaru Impreza WRX 2.0 turbo

NOS

Recommended Posts

I am going to look at this car tomorrow evening (pictures attached).

It is a 2002 WRX with 100,000 miles. The car is pretty much stock.

I have never owned a Subaru before so what should I be looking out for tomorrow whilst inspecting this car? What problems are Impreza's specifically prone to, etc.? [OOPS][/OOPS]

The biggest problem is that most are driven by tits.

I am aware of this, but this seller seems like a genuine mature owner. He is from a small town and a guy I work with knows him and assures me he is simply a car enthusiast and not your stereotypical Subaru Impreza owner chav. I completely appreciate the reputation these cars have because of their owners, but I do genuinely just like the car.

The fact that it is completely stock should mean it is decent. They are notorious for chocolate gearboxes and bottom ends, that is only really when pushing things past stock though. As long as it hasn't seen a lot of hard launches it should be pretty reliable.

You will know straight away with the maintenence history, if he is serious about the car he will have stacks of it.

Now looking at the picture though, it has a front mount? That can't be right surely?

Assuming its on it's original engine, I would be concerned about the mileage if it's running anything other than stock boost, or if you are planning to up the boost. Listen out for what sounds like piston slap when cold, it's the first sign of impending problems. Bottom ends tend give up at around 90k with high boost/driven hard. My eldest has been through 3 now and 2 of them suffered failed bottom end at that sort of mileage, apparently this is really common. The true factory STIs are the ones to go for as they have uprated internals and can stand more abuse.

More concerning, are we losing you then Nos? Thought you lived for Supas and the FF image.

No, of course you're not losing me! You're not that lucky...yet!

Making sure that it is a WRX and not a normal 2 litre Sport tarted up is a useful thing to check!

How will I check if it's a genuine WRX?

It has sti badge on the back,if it is an sti you'll get nicer seats, interior, bottom end will be good for 400bhp with full supporting mods and better brakes.

Oh yeah and intercooler water spray system (although probably doesn't work due to it having a front mount now)

It's not a STI. The seller told me the badge is just on it for show. He assures me that it's a WRX.
